Katy Perry has released the first “Roar” music video which focuses on just the lyrics in emoji form.
The first Katy Perry “Roar” music video is a lyric video, an increasingly-common promotional video for many artists, which is supposed to help viewers follow along with what’s being said in the single.
“Roar’s” lyric video takes on a different approach: It uses the iOS/iPhone emojis you’ve come to know and love in lieu of several words in the song.
We like this spin on lyric videos and are sure it’s only a matter of time until someone copies this idea. For what’s basically a three and a half minute text message conversation, it’s surprisingly fun to watch. Android and other cell phone users may be introduced to many of these emojis for the first time when they watch.
Perry released “Roar” over the weekend following a leak of the song. It is her first single off her forthcoming studio album Prism, which drops this fall. The pop superstar announced the new album with a gold-plated truck driving through Los Angeles last month.
Emojis on iOS have become increasingly more common in every day text conversations. Used by consumers to put a personal, friendly touch on conversations between Apple devices, emojis were originally added to iOS for the Japanese market because the concept has been wildly popular in that country for years.
Users in the United States and elsewhere in the world ended up learning the secret to turning them on in their own phone, and thus a new form of communication was born.
