Earlier today, Universal surprised Jurassic World fans with an early release of the full trailer that has been teased for the last week. While you were grinning in excitement for the next trip to Isla Nublar, there were a couple of interesting details that were revealed about what’s to come with the next installment of this beloved franchise.
1. The main predator may be a mix of a raptor, T-Rex and pteranodon (a.k.a. your worst nightmare)
Every Jurassic Park movie has had at least one major dinosaur predator. In Jurassic Park it was the T-Rex (which, spoiler alert, ended up being the hero at the end). In The Lost World it was not one, but two tyrannosauruses. And in Jurassic Park 3, it was the spinosaurus, which was the bigger, meatier version of the T-Rex.
In Jurassic World, the main predator is a genetic hybrid (hasn’t this universe learned to stop tampering with genetics yet!?), which was rumored and then confirmed in this trailer. But, the Jurassic Park series may be taking genetic manipulation to a whole new level. Did you catch the claws on the hybrid dinosaur when Chris Pratt’s character was running? It has huge velociraptor-style claws, and giant T-Rex feet.
Or… could those be talons? There may be reason to believe this thing has wings too. In one of the scenes in the trailer, you see the crowd of tourists looking up and running while we zoom in from the perspective of a flying dinosaur. Sure, we could be seeing the return of the pteranodons that are apparently flying around the world (remember the ending of Jurassic Park 3?) but given that this scene hits right around the introduction of this new hybrid predator, we assume this thing is flying.
We never get to see the full figure or face of the new main predator so this is unconfirmed at this point. But, if they really wanted to create a hybrid dinosaur with all kinds of terrifying characteristics, adding wings definitely helps.
2. The water dinosaur is not the main predator of ‘Jurassic World’
It’s safe to say that the dinosaur the size of a large skyscraper that comes swimming up out of the water to eat the great white shark is not the main predator of this movie. In terms of this trailer, think of this dinosaur as a spectacle to show exactly how grandiose not just the dinosaurs will be, but the movie itself.
I also couldn’t help notice the symbolism of this giant dinosaur eating a shark. Remember when Jaws, a Spielberg movie, was the biggest monster movie in the world back in the 70s? Spielberg says that his inspiration for Jurassic Park (aside from the book of course) came from the monster movie hype that bloomed out of Jaws.
3. Will another hurricane hit Isla Nublar and close down the park?
There are a lot of throwbacks and allusions to the existing Jurassic Park franchise throughout this trailer (see number four below for more details), but one I couldn’t help but notice was in the control room. In the scene where Chris Pratt orders Bryce Dallas Howard’s character to “evacuate the park” you can see weather patterns on the screens in front of her. Though the hurricane doesn’t appear to be over the island, it does look like a very serious storm is about to hit Isla Nublar. As one might remember, a hurricane hit Isla Nublar in Jurassic Park which is what caused the perimeter fences to go down, unleashing chaos!
However, if you look at the status of the park in the central part of this photo, you can see several red dots. Do these indicate that the park is already starting to fall apart? Surprise! More chaos and destruction!
4. Don’t forget: You love this franchise!
From the subtle piano keys playing the beloved score to the gallimimus stampede, there are quite a few nods to the existing Jurassic Park movies. Other nods may include the hurricane (as mentioned above), the feeding of the shark to the predator (RIP cute goat from Jurassic Park), and the dinosaur shadow/silhouette on a scared child’s face. Right down to the flare Bryce Dallas Howard’s character has in her hand. Remember when Dr. Grant and Malcom both used flares to lure the T-Rex away from the kids in Jurassic Park? And let’s not forget the flare gun that saved the Kirby family at the end of Jurassic Park 3. As it turns out, flares have had a big role in this franchise! There’s even a scene where Bryce Dallas Howard’s character screams “Run!” We can’t forget Dr. Sadler’s plea to Dr. Grant after she has been attacked by the raptors.
These scenes appearing in the trailer aren’t just coincidences. They are meant to remind fans from this decades-old franchise that though this movie is 10 years removed from the last one, there’s still a lot of reason to be excited – beginning with nostalgia.
This is also being played up in other ways too, with the official Facebook page making references to moments from the previous movies as well:
5. Velociraptors are your friends!
Although there are a lot of nostalgic elements to this trailer thus far, there is one major element to this movie that will change from the original three. Did you notice that scene at the end of the trailer when the raptors barge out of their pens and run alongside Chris Pratt on a motorcycle? Well, they didn’t barge out, they were simultaneously released. And they weren’t running to attack or eat Chris Pratt, they were running with Chris Pratt. Notice how Pratt is completely unphased by the meat-eating predators with two of them even running along ahead of him, passing him right by.
In recent months rumors have pointed to the idea that Chris Pratt’s role will be a dinosaur trainer and that we would be seeing some dinosaurs be the “good guys” in this movie. Some reports mentioned that there would be trained velociraptors and maybe even a trained T-Rex. With Jurassic World adding this scene at the very end of the trailer, there has to be some importance to it and we think that’s exactly what this is.
With the success of Godzilla, a monster movie with a larger-than-life monster who smashes everything but eventually saves the day, it has been proven that audiences don’t reject the notion of scary monsters ultimately becoming the heroes. After all, this happened in Jurassic Park when the T-Rex comes swooping in to eat the velociraptors as well.
There will be a lot more to learn in the months to come. Hopefully we’ll be getting a glimpse of this new hybrid dinosaur sooner rather than later. Jurassic World is set to be released on June 12, 2015.
