Since Universal announced Jurassic World 2 last month, everyone has been wondering: What will the sequel be about?
While the studio has remained silent concerning Jurassic World 2’s plot (and let’s be honest — that’s probably because they have no firm ideas yet), the director of the first film is offering hints about what may be coming in the sequel.
Speaking to Wired recently, Colin Trevorrow strongly hinted that 2018’s Jurassic World sequel will focus on a couple of remarks made during this summer’s massive hit: Creating dinosaurs could become a popular business.
“What if [dinosaurs] went open source? It’s almost like InGen is Mac, but what if PC gets their hands on it? What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur?” Trevorrow said to Wired, comparing this concept to how nuclear power started and then led to weaponization.
“And Dr Wu says in the film, when he’s warning Dr Mesrani, ‘we’re not always going to be the only ones who can make a dinosaur.’ I think that’s an interesting idea that even if we don’t explore fully in this film, there is room for this universe to expand.”
Oh, so a cinematic universe akin to what Marvel is doing should be expected? “I shouldn’t use the word universe, because people will think we’re making a Jurassic World universe — we’re not,” he said.
Phew.
Anyone who’s hoping for a movie focusing on the theme park again may be out of luck. Besides the fact that Jurassic World left the park in shambles, Trevorrow suggested that it would be too redundant to keep the story on Isla Nublar. “[It will not be] just a bunch of dinosaurs chasing people on an island,” Trevorrow said to Wired. “That’ll get old real fast.”
There’ve been murmurs that the next Jurassic World film could be called Jurassic War, and these plot ideas from Trevorrow certainly make you think that title is a possibility.
Trevorrow is writing the script for the sequel with Derek Connolly, but no director is currently attached to the project.
