Good news/bad news: Jumanji, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, has been delayed about five months, according to the actor.
On Friday, The Rock posted an update to Jumanji on his Instagram (as he is wont to do):
It sounds like the move in release date could be twofold.
One, Johnson says, the movie is “full of Christmas wish fulfillment, fun and heart.” This sounds like the team behind the film could’ve realized that a holiday release, rather than the original July 28, 2017 debut, could mean a more profitable opening weekend.
On the other hand, Johnson also says, “after months of shooting and editing our movie together, we realized we have a big family franchise on our hands,” which sounds like they could be considering possible additions to the Jumanji brand.
Not only will they want to make sure this first movie is as good as it can possibly get, since it’s already been a bit controversial (between the very concept of making a sequel to the beloved movie and Karen Gillan’s outfit), but they’re probably also thinking about setting this up to lead into more films.
