Johnny Depp is in negotiations for his next role, directed by Inception‘s cinematographer!
Depp is in talks to star in Wally Pfister’s directoral debut titled Trascendence. Pfister was the cinematographer for Inception, for which he won an Academy Award in 2011. The film is written by Jack Paglen.
THR states the specific plot details have been kept secret, but that “the story centers on a man who creates a computer that develops a malevolent awareness. Depp will play a husband who gets sucked into the computer, contingent on changes.” Additionally, sources say that Transcendence is in the realm between Inception and 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Other actors potentially leading the film are Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) as the film’s female lead, as well as James McAvoy (Atonement) and Tobey Maguire (Spiderman). Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds), has an offer out for a supporting role.
Depp was apparently incredibly wanted by Pfister to play this role, as he is receiving a “mammoth payday”: he’ll receive $20 million against 15% of the gross.
Depp was most recently seen in Dark Shadows earlier this year, as well as a brief appearance in 21 Jump Street. His next film to hit theaters will be The Lone Ranger, in which he’ll portray the Native American, Tonto.
