Legendary Star Wars composer John Williams has confirmed that he’s scoring the eighth Star Wars movie, directed by Rian Johnson.
It was a glorious day when we learned that John Williams would return for The Force Awakens, after composing the score for all six previous Star Wars movies.
And today is no less glorious: At a live performance of his Star Wars themes at Tanglewood Music Center, Williams confirmed to the audience that he’s commencing work on the as-of-yet untitled Episode VIII in a couple of weeks.
MassLive, which attended the event, reports that Williams’ main reason for returning was to compose new music for the character of Rey (Daisy Ridley). Williams was reportedly, “enchanted by actress Daisy Ridley’s portrayal of Rey and does not want another composer scoring her scenes.”

Williams also told the crowd he does not yet know who Rey’s parents are. But as he’ll (obviously) be seeing an early cut of the movie, he might have the answer soon!
Star Wars: Episode VIII is directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Oscar Isaac as Poe, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Carrie Fisher as Leia, and Mark Hamill as Luke. Gwendoline Christie, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o and Andy Serkis also star.
