Last November, John Green revealed that he had spoken to superstar Taylor Swift on the phone.
The Paper Towns author had revealed the exciting news on Twitter shortly after it happened:
Taylor Swift is very funny and generous over the telephone. (Which I know because we just spoke on the phone.)

The tweets led some websites including TIME to wonder: What did they speak about?
As luck would have it, Hypable visited the set of Paper Towns in North Carolina a couple weeks after John and Taylor had their much-publicized phone call. During one of our interviews with John we got onto the topic of that mysterious chat.
TIME’s guesses (a new song, a joint interview, a return to Spotify) were completely wrong. His side of the conversation went as follows:
“Hi! So nice of Cara to connect us.”
“Yeah no I really love your new album I think it’s amazing I think it’s so great.”
“Well that’s very sweet of you to say thank you I’m glad that you enjoyed it, thanks for reading it, thanks for talking about it so much.”
“Oh that’s nice! Thanks! Yeah, no, we’re here in North Carolina. It looks pretty.”
“Alright, it was good talking to you.”
And that was it! No discussions about Taylor Swift contributing something to Paper Towns. No interview plans. Nothing major. Just a simple conversation between two friendly people.
“It was very brief, and honestly the moment I was talking to her I was just like, ‘I just need to get off the phone. I don’t wanna fuck this up. I don’t want to say something weird,'” he told us.
His game plan for the call was simple: Get in, get out. “I just want to tell her that I like her new album, that I think it’s really good, that I admire the way she continues to engage with her audience. And go [off the phone]. Get out. Just… clean exit! I think I did that, I think it was a reasonably clean exit.”
The author seemingly used the same “clean exit” strategy on Thursday when Swift tweeted some kind words of support for Paper Towns, which opens in theaters today:
John Green is my favorite writer and @Caradelevingne @halstonsage @natandalex are some of my favorite people. Can't WAIT to see Paper Towns.
