J.J. Abrams revealed that he wants Star Wars: Episode VII to (shocker) be as real as possible.
EW got the chance to ask Star Wars: Episode VII director Abrams a few questions about the progress of the film.
Abrams was asked what advice he’s taken from the many fans who feel it their duty to “assist him” and make sure Episode VII doesn’t turn into another disappointment of a Star Wars film. Here’s what he had to say:
It’s been nice see that how important it is and to be reminded how important it is to so many people. We all know that [creator George Lucas’] dream has become almost a religion to some people. I remember reading a thing somewhere, someone wrote about just wanting [the new film] to feel real; to feel authentic. I remember I felt that way when I was 11 years old when I saw the first one. As much of a fairy tale as it was, it felt real. And to me, that is exactly right.
It should be satisfying to fans to find out that he wants it to feel as real as the first one. Fans agree that the original trilogy is great and want the new films to follow suit.
But will Star Wars: Episode VII have a very similar tone to a specific episode? Abrams had this to say:
Impossible for me to say because it’s going to be an evolving thing. I would say we are working really hard to make a movie that feels as emotional and authentic and exciting as possible. Whatever your favorite Star Wars movie is and how to compare it is really sort of subjective.
Though this is the first time Abrams has commented on the fact that they want Episode VII to be realistic like the original trilogy, it’s not the first time we’ve known. Thus far they’ve announced that the films will contain less CGI and will be shot on real film.
