Origin from Jennifer L. Armentrout released on August 27. Armentrout answered a few of our questions about the action packed novel and the Lux Series being optioned for film.
When writing Origin was it difficult to write from two points of view?
For me, it wasn’t. Writing in two points of view allows you to explore more themes/scenes/elements that you necessarily can’t do in one POV. It’s fun opening that door and getting inside a different character’s head and allowing the readers to experience a different character.
How did you decide what Daemon’s voice would sound like?
It kind of just happened. When I first started Obsidian, I created Katy and then Daemon’s voice sort of grew out of hers. I wanted someone who was quick with their wit, could be dangerously charming and yet had a rougher edge to them.
Origin is the fourth book the series, did you always know where the story was heading or has the plot changed from your original vision?
I rarely plot out a book or series, but I always have an idea of how the series will end and where the main characters would be, so I know what point A and point D is, but points B and C comes along as I’m writing.
The Lux Series was recently optioned for film where were you when you found out and what was your reaction?
The first call/email that I received about it that was serious–that was, this could really happen kind of email–I was visiting my sick mother at her home. I was really glad that I got to tell her that this was happening before she passed away as she was a huge fan of the Lux series. When I found out that the option had went through, that we had a deal on the table, I pretty much just stood there and was all bugged eyed. Not attractive. Trust me.
What one scene are you most excited to see if the movie gets made? What one scene do you think is vital to keep in order to keep the integrity of the adaptation?
I can tell you that the readers would love to see the laptop scene make it into the Obsidian movie. It’s not sure much a scene that I think needs to be in the movie to keep it close to the book, but more of the attitude of the two main characters. The snark and wit between Katy and Daemon is a must for the screen version.
We did some fan casting on Hypable for Daemon and Katy. Is there anyone you envision as your lead character?
Oh no, I’m terrible with these kind of things. I’m eager to see who ends up in auditions myself.
What are you working now?
I’m working on the sequel to White Hot Kiss (which comes out December 31 through Harlequin Teen), and then after that, I’m going to be working on another mystery/suspense novel for Disney/Hyperion.
