Jane the Virgin season 1, episode 17 developed some character plots last night, with one potentially huge twist! Read on for the full recap.
Reunions between the Villanueva women were a top result of the show last night.
Jane and Rafael: Why can’t these two just have a happy ending for once? The episode starts with Jane doing her baby registry with her co-worker because Rafael has too much going on at the hotel. Jane is very understanding and soon has her own issues to deal with as she gets some advice from another mother at Target. This makes Jane start to panic as she doesn’t know half of what the woman is mentioning. To doula or not to doula, are we right? Meanwhile, Rafael informs Petra that they are spending a huge amount of money to make the Marabella a spring break destination. He filed for the permit so they can’t stop now!
Unfortunately for him, the permit never got authenticated. But they can’t stop because the deposits are way too big to lose. During the brief hour his assistant told Jane he would be available, he gets an urgent phone call and has to leave. Jane, who is already stressed about being a mother, as she is seeing her future daughter tell her she is not doing it right, feels frustrated and worried Rafael might not be there for them.
The party goes off and then is, of course, shut down when the police show up. Rafael heads back to his room, where he told Jane to come after the party, and he says a lot of hurtful things. He is also drunk. So Jane leaves but agrees to talk to him the next day after she gets off of work. Having spent the evening caring for the baby of her new friend Andi, Michael’s ex, she worries that she might not be a good mother or be able to handle everything if Rafael isn’t going to play an active daily role. These two need to figure it out!
Xo and Rogelio: The lovebirds have moved in and are thriving! At least they were until Jane comes over and asks her mother if they have said “I love you” yet. And they haven’t. Xo said that since she asked Rogelio to move in together, she wants him to say it first. She tries to play a game later on, asking him what he loves but he doesn’t pick up on her hints. When he asks Michael at the party to help him figure out what went wrong, Michael suggests that she wants him to say “I love you.” Xo ends up telling Rogelio that she loves him and he responds by saying he is on his way there with her. Essentially, he is holding back because of the animosity between Xo and his mother… which is why she is coming to visit! Drama!
Michael: This was a good week to be #TeamMichael, as Rogelio put it at their bro-date getting pedicures. What lead to this strange event? Michael came over to the house to give Rogelio a certificate from his ride-a-long just as Jane and Rafael were coming over. Jane tells her father that it makes her and Rafael uncomfortable that he is such good friends with Michael, especially because she isn’t with him or carrying his child.
On the man-date, Rogelio tells Micahel the following: “Between you and me, I would like to declare myself #TeamMichael. But first and foremost I must remain #TeamJane. That means I must encourage you, uh, #MoveOn.” He also mentions that it makes Rafael uncomfortable so of course Michael agrees to go the party, where Rafael will be. At the party, Rogelio lies and tells Michael that he thinks Jane and Rafael will end up working out so he should move on. He does so by calling Andi, who does know that she and Jane share an ex. Intrigue!
Petra: Poor Petra. We actually like you now! The whole episode finds Petra dealing with her partnership with Rafael and fending off subtle advances from Aaron. When the party goes bust, she heads over to Aaron’s room to seek comfort and the two kiss. She breaks the kiss, saying she still isn’t over Rafael and that this won’t help. The next day she asks if they can just stay friends. BUT! It turns out our Petra is using her evil powers for good for once! She tells Rafael that based on her feelings and little things that “Aaron” has been doing makes her believe that Aaron is actual Roman, her dead lover!!!
That twist and the reconciliation of Alba, Xo, and Jane by the end of the episode made this chapter worth its watch!
