It looks like Jane the Virgin put a wrench in one of their main couples this past week when Jane rejected Rafael’s proposal, for now at least. Read on to see what we think will happen next!
In the last episode of Jane the Virgin, Rafael not only proposed living together to Jane but also marriage. After taking the episode to think, and even test Rafael, Jane told him that while she does want to marry him, she needs more time. It seems that despite their “love at first sight” fairy tale romance, she can’t just jump into a lifelong commitment of marriage, despite having his baby.
While no one can blame Jane for wanting to take things slowly, it is a different step for a television show to take. Most shows would have come to this question much earlier on, but the show allows the characters to deal with their feelings in a normal time frame. And Rafael’s reasoning for wanting to get married also makes sense given his character’s recent health and previous marital problems.
Is it so wrong for Raphael to want to get married this fast? He has recently survived a dangerous round of cancer that clearly changed his view on the world. He got out of a marriage that never really had a chance, given that he initially stole Petra from Lachlan. Their love might have been true, but after she stayed with him during the cancer she faltered and had an affair with his best friend. Petra isn’t perfect and luckily Rafael got out of that relationship relatively unharmed. After all, she did give him his only child… it just wasn’t with her, as planned.
Enter Jane, the girl that he met years ago and felt an instant connection with. However, this was during his playboy days and he missed his opportunity. Enter Michael, who met Jane and they too had an instant connection. (Wouldn’t all girls love to have this problem, am I right?) Upon getting pregnant, Michael can’t handle his jealousy and Jane can’t fight her attraction. Which led to her calling off their engagement. It also had something to do with Michael’s lying for the past couple months about his investigation.
So the question becomes, will Jane and Rafael say ‘I do’ before season one ends? We assume she will have the baby by the end of the season, but does that mean enough time will have passed for Jane to feel more comfortable with the idea of marrying him? Her recent rekindling friendship with Michael certainly won’t help matters, because when all is said and done he is a good guy who got caught up in a horrible situation. Rafael seems to be the better choice but he is also the risky choice.
Personally, I believe that Jane should marry Rafael and that Michael should find someone that he can care about. Hopefully that bit of dialogue a couple of episodes doesn’t turn out to be something. “…Michael was in love with Jane until the day he died.” That would definitely put a wrinkle in this love triangle!
