It was only a matter of time before a 50 Shades of Gay book hit shelves! And luckily, one of the funniest guys we know has penned it! Check out this exclusive interview with author, actor and our friend Jeffery Self!
You may recognize Jeffery Self from various TV shows like Hot In Cleveland, 90210, Desperate Housewives and notably as Liz Lemon’s gay nephew Randy Lemon on 30 Rock. But he’s also a brand new author with the aptly titled 50 Shades of Gay, which is available for digital download on the Kindle for $9.99 as well as paperback.
With recent news that the Fifty Shades of Grey movie will be eyeing a 2014 release date, we have to wonder if Jeffery Self’s new book 50 Shades of Gay will get optioned to the big screen!
We asked Jeffery Self a couple of questions about the new book and what we can expect from the new homoerotic novel!
You’re known for your unique sense of wit and comedy…can we expect that in 50 Shades of Gay?
Why thank you. The book is full of sexiness but it’s also just as full of my pop culturally obsessed mind. I wanted to write a book that could both turn you on and make you laugh on the same page. So I’m hoping that’s what I did.
What made you want to write 50 Shades of Gay?
I was really fascinated by the phenomenon of the original Fifty Shades Of Grey and all its subsequent off shoots. At the end of the day the book is just a campy trashy good time… and I wanted to have one of those myself.
What are the similarities or differences from Fifty Shades of Grey?
The story line is loosely inspired by the original, while that is inspired by Twilight which is probably inspired by something else.
What type of person should pick up 50 Shades of Gay?
My hope is that all sorts of people will get into the book. Sure, gay guys will love it for obvious reasons but I also think straight women and gay women will also really love the book. Who doesn’t love reading about a fictionalized People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive?
I know you have written another book before this one but it hasn’t come out yet. Can you tell us a little about that and when we can expect it?
That book is called Straight People: A Spotter’s Guide. It’s humor is in the style of a bird watching field guide but about straight people from my gay point of view. I cover migration patterns of heterosexuals, feeding habits, mating rituals, etc. It will be out in stores and online this May.
