Hypable’s BattleShips: ‘Doctor Who’

12:00 pm EDT, October 23, 2012

Our tenth round of BattleShips begins with Doctor Who! Which ship will make it off to the fandom vs. fandom showdown?

Hypable has decided to take on the monumental task of hosting a fandom shipping tournament, where we pit ship against ship and fandom against fandom to see which relationship will emerge the victor. In our qualifying round we asked you to pick your top 10 favorite fandoms, and we decided that the race was so close we actually made it the top 16.

Round 1: Damon and Elena from Vampire Diaries
Round 2: Matthew and Mary from Downton Abbey
Round 3: Nick and Jess from New Girl
Round 4: Stiles and Derek from Teen Wolf
Round 5: Leonard and Penny from The Big Bang Theory
Round 6: Merlin and Arthur from Merlin
Round 7: Castle and Kate from Castle
Round 8: Bones and Booth from Bones
Round 9: Aang and Katara from Avatar

And now Doctor Who gets its turn in our preliminary rounds to see which ship will represent each fandom in the final showdown.

And your ‘Doctor Who’ OTP is: Rose & the 10th Doctor

Shipping Recap

Let’s get you a little lesson on Doctor Who ships. Who’s canon and who’s fanon (fandom created)?

What we consider canon

Nine/Rose, Ten/Rose, Jack/Ten, Rose/Jack, Rory/Amy, Rose/Mickey, Martha/Mickey, Jack/Alonso, Martha/Jack, Donna/Jack, River/Eleven, River/Ten, Doctor/Madame de Pompadour, Idris/Eleven, Jackie Tyler/Pete Tyler, Amy/Eleven

As per our opinion, a canon relationship is one where the two characters have actually been involved in some sort of emotional or physical relations on the show. Flirting, kissing, sleeping together, that’s all something that would make a pair a canon ship. At least, that’s how we see it on Hypable. We’ve seen the characters above do everything from a small kiss to steamy sex scenes.

What we consider fanon

Donna/Ten,, Martha/Ten, Rory/Eleven, Craig/Eleven, Jack/Eleven, Jack/River, Sally Sparrow/Ten

A fanon ship is something that the fans would love to see on the show, but hasn’t actually happened (yet). Inside this realm of ships are also all the ships that have been hinted to in the show, but nothing has actually occurred.

There are also the ships that are inspired by two characters just interacting and having great chemistry. While these aren’t romantic relationships on the show, they’ve definitely turned out their fair share of romance fics and images on the Internet.

Vote for your OTP!

Only one ship will move on and represent Doctor Who in the final rounds of BattleShips. So which will you pick? Are you going to vote for something that has happened on the show because you can’t wait to see more, or will you vote for a fanon couple and try to show the producers that they need to give it more attention?

Pick your couple and tell us in the comments what you chose!

Netflix has announced Bill Nye Saves the World, a new talk show slated for Spring 2017.

In a statement, Netflix says “each episode will tackle a topic from a scientific point of view, dispelling myths, and refuting anti-scientific claims that may be espoused by politicians, religious leaders or titans of industry.”

“Since the start of the Science Guy show, I’ve been on a mission to change the world by getting people everywhere excited about the fundamental ideas in science,” said Bill Nye in a press release.

“Today, I’m excited to be working with Netflix on a new show, where we’ll discuss the complex scientific issues facing us today, with episodes on vaccinations, genetically modified foods and climate change. With the right science and good writing, we’ll do our best to enlighten and entertain our audience. And, perhaps we’ll change the world a little.”

Netflix also promises that “In Bill’s unfiltered style, he will bring in special guests, conduct experiments and demonstrations, and ultimately let the facts lead the argument.”

Bill Nye is best known for Bill Nye the Science Guy, the half-hour PBS show that ran from 1993 through 1998.

The theme song is iconic. Science RULES!

The new Netflix series seems like a continuation of Bill Nye the Science Guy, so we’re very excited for the new show to launch in 2017.

The first Sherlock series 4 trailer premiered last month at San Diego Comic-Con, where Cumberbatch teased that “a lot comes home to roost this season… it’s ballsy.” Indeed, the trailer suggests that the characters have a lot to be concerned about. Check it out below:

The new season of Sherlock doesn’t have a premiere date, but it’s expected to launch in late 2016 or early 2017. Perhaps today’s portrait release suggests that some more news is on the horizon!

The last season of Sherlock aired in early 2015, but the busy schedules of Cumberbatch and Freeman have left the show with production challenges.

Coming as absolutely no surprise whatsoever, Netflix is bringing Stranger Things back for a second season!

Can we get a YAAAS?

Netflix’s hugely successful ’80s horror series Stranger Things has been renewed for season 2. The news hit Wednesday morning, and fans are already losing their minds (as well they should).

Here’s Netflix’s official announcement video:

The video plays the show’s eerie theme, over what appears to be the season 2 episode titles: “MadMax,” “The Boy Who Came Back to Life,” “The Pumpkin Patch,” “The Palace,” “The Storm,” “The Pollywog,” “The Secret Cabin,” “The Brain,” and “The Lost Brother.”

Netflix has confirmed that there will be nine episodes of Stranger Things season 2. Writers/creators Matt and Ross Duffer will return, along with executive producers Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen. No news of cast changes yet, although we know that four new characters will be showing up.

We’re stoked to see this awesome series return for a second season. No spoilers, but Stranger Things season 1 kind of ended on a major cliffhanger, which needs to be resolved.

While we’re glad to have official confirmation that the show is returning, there never really was a question, considering the series’ popularity. In fact, we’ve already compiled a list of 60 questions the show needs to answer.

The Duffer brothers have also been pretty candid about their future plans for the series, hinting that season 2 will pick up at least a year after the first season ended. They’re further implying that the show could continue for as many as seven seasons, to mirror Harry Potter and allow us to watch the kids grow up.

“I think we talked like a larger time jump where the kids are older now and it’s a different decade,” Ross Duffer tells EW. “That’s something we batted around from the very beginning. But for us, there’s still more story here, there’s still things that are unresolved.”

But first, let’s wait and see if Stranger Things season 2 can maintain the momentum of season 1. As much as we love Netflix series, they’ve been kind of hit-and-miss with their second seasons.
