Rosemary Clement-Moore has crafted an exciting ghost story with just a hint of paranormal elements. Texas Gothic is a fast paced read that introduces us to the Goodnight’s, a family of kitchen witches.
When sisters Amy and Phin Goodnight show up to ranch-sit for their Aunt Hyacinth, they don’t realize quite how much the experience will change their lives. Phin is so wrapped up in her scientific studies, which are a little paranormal in nature, that she rarely notices anything that doesn’t fall directly into her sphere of interest. Amy wants nothing to do with the paranormal anything- in fact; she has made it her life’s work to act as a buffer between her family, who see nothing wrong with talking about spells and such in public, and the rest of civilization.
One month at Goodnight Farm should not be too difficult, except for the bones that were found on McCulloch property, right next door. Ben McCulloch, the son of the ranch family, is not pleased by the discovery of bones and even less pleased with the presence of the Goodnight’s. Amy and Ben have their fair share of unpleasant run ins including one that leaves Amy with the nickname underwear girl.
Amy refuses to acknowledge she has any powers but when a ghost suddenly starts following her and asking for help Amy has to come to terms with her abilities. To make matters more complicated Ben doesn’t believe in the possibility of ghosts and doesn’t want Amy on his property. Unfortunately for Ben he is stuck with the Goodnight girls as they are helping on the dig.
Texas Gothic is fast paced with all kinds of quirky twist and turns. Amy is a great heroine with snappy dialogue and lots of attitude. There is definitely a Scooby Doo gang vibe as Amy and company try to discover the origin of the bones and the story of the ghost. This is a really fun read especially if you like a good mystery. I also suggest reading Splendor Falls, a gothic tale with a broken ballerina.
