This week for Hypable Honors we chose a pair of deserving ladies from two of our favorite comic book shows, who happen to do a little ass-kicking when they’re not doling out sound advice.
It’s been quite the week for comic book shows, as Agent Carter wrapped up its first season, and Arrow made some big moves to kick off a three week hiatus before the show returns to run straight to its season 3 finale.
We couldn’t help but notice the performances of the two lovely ladies below. Their characters have been through quite a bit, but neither of them will let fear or men stop them from doing what they think is right. Right on ladies!
Make sure to let us know in the comments who you think had the best performances of the week!
Hypable Honors
Show: ‘Arrow’
Actor: Willa Holland
Thea Queen has had quite the arc since her Arrow season one debut. The bratty, drug-using teenager has morphed into a responsible, blade-wielding powerhouse that doles out sound advice along with some seriously formidable fighting.
While Thea has rode quite the emotional roller coaster in three seasons, Willa Holland’s portrayal of her has been nothing but steadfast. She has always delivered whatever the character needed, even if that was happening as the B-plot for a number of episodes. Whether her character is worrying about Roy not acting like himself, or throwing herself headfirst at a problem that needs to be solved, Willa Holland has never let Speedy seem one dimensional.
This past week had Thea making moves that Oliver didn’t approve of, but she stuck to her guns and made her own decisions. She chose to rid herself of Malcolm once and for all, refused to just sit back and do as Oliver instructed regarding Laurel and the truth about Sara’s death, and lastly, handed herself to the heir of the demon. Anyone who thinks Thea isn’t making her own moves is clearly delusional. Thea has tired of being the lied-to and has thrown herself whole-heartedly into her own agenda.
Willa has helped transform Thea from the ultimate damsel in distress to the strong and capable sister that Oliver has always needed. We can’t wait to see where Thea’s arch takes her, because as long as Willa is at the helm, it’s going to be one hell of a ride.
Show: ‘Agent Carter’
Actor: Hayley Atwell
While season 1 of Agent Carter may not have set rating records, it certainly wormed its way into our hearts and that is without a doubt thanks to the incredibly talented Hayley Atwell.
Those that hadn’t already found her Peggy Carter portrayal in Captain America: The First Avenger enchanting were met with quite the challenge in Agent Carter. Not only did she prove to be a character worthy of her own show, but she smashed those expectations to pulp. From the compelling chase scene in a milk truck to the quiet moments with Peggy staring at a vial of her beloved Captain America’s blood, Agent Carter did right by its title character and we couldn’t be more grateful.
It’s been a lovely change of pace from the relentless stream of male-driven hero tales. Don’t get us wrong, we love a good Captain America story, but having Agent Carter at the helm of her own destiny was one of the smartest decisions Marvel could have made. She is an instrumental part of creating what will one day become S.H.I.E.L.D., and leads an absolutely fascinating life in service to this country.
Agent Carter would not have been the same without Hayley Atwell reprising the role, as she took the woman behind Captain America and muscled her into the spotlight-worthy woman Marvel fans have been clamoring for. A second season may not be a foregone conclusion, but as far as we’re concerned, it would be the smartest move ABC could make. It’s definitely what Peggy would do.
