How We Hype is a twice-monthly feature on Hypable where we tell you what we’re doing in fandom over the weekend!
Rewatching ‘Broadchurch’ season 1 to refresh for season 2 – Laura Byrne Cristiano
I want to make sure I remember all the nuances from season 1. I am also rereading Samantha Shannon’s The Bone Season before book two in her series comes out, The Mime Order. The series is all about different levels of clairvoyants and it’s really difficult to keep them all straight, so I want to make sure I remember it all in time for the second book release.
Rereading ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ – Kate Bonk
A bit ironically and a bit not. As awful as the movie looks, I want to be able to fully tear it apart versus the book!
Watching the season 6 premiere of ‘Glee’ – Mitchel Clow
It’s been a while since I could be convinced something was worth watching on live television. I don’t ever remember being so excited for a season premiere than I am for this one. Anyone who listens to Hypable’s podcast about the show, Glee Chat, will understand my excitement for the final 13.
Heading to Wizard World: NOLA – Karen Rought
This weekend, I’ll be heading to the New Orleans Wizard World convention. Guests include several Marvel boys, like Brett Dalton (Grant Ward, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Michael Rooker (Yondu, Guardians of the Galaxy), plus the likes of Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter), and Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore) and Ian Somerholder (Damon Salvatore) from The Vampire Diaries. But my #1 guest will be Holly Marie Combs (Piper Halliwell, Charmed), as it’ll be the first time I’m meeting my childhood hero. (As kids, we all pretended we could freeze and blow things up with just our hands, right?)
Watching classic Disney movies and reading about Alan Turing – Brittany Lovely
With Once Upon a Time on a never ending hiatus, I want to spend an afternoon getting reacquainted with the Queens of Darkness as told by the creative teams at Disney. First up, 101 Dalmatians. I have not seen this movie in its entirety since I crossed into the double digits. Next, Sleeping Beauty. I saw Maleficent in theaters and was underwhelmed. Finally, I will be watching my all time favorite movie, The Little Mermaid, and in-between belting the songs, I will pay closer attention to Ursula’s storyline.
I will also continue reading Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges. Out of concern for my well-being, I have been asked to refrain from seeing The Imitation Game for a fourth time. Instead I turn my enthusiasm to this excellent biography to fill the void.
Cooking fandom-themed food – Jimmy Bean
My Reddit secret Santa (hello if you’re out there!) was very charitable to me this year, gifting me with, among other things, Dining with the Doctor and A Feast of Ice and Fire. For those that don’t know, these are cookbooks that feature nerdy fandom inspired recipes and beverages. As someone that loves to cook and does it every day, this came as an incredible surprise. As for the weekend, I think it’ll have to be Baked Apples from the North, Elizabethan Lemon Cakes, and a Queen Victoria’s Nightcap. Or maybe a Castle Black salad and a Fish Fingers and custard martini? Who knows. Either way, I’ll be making it in my Superman apron, also courtesy of my Secret Santa. This Reddit secret Santa thing isn’t joking around, guys.
Eagerly anticipating the release of Mark Ronson’s ‘Uptown Special’ Pamela Gocobachi
UK producer Mark Ronson seems to have struck gold with his collab hit with soulful crooner, Bruno Mars. The duo’s toe-tapping hit, “Uptown Funk” packs a punch with its retro vibe and big band sound. This song has quickly become one of my favorite tracks at the moment and as such, this weekend, I find myself highly anticipating the release of Ronson’s fourth studio album, Uptown Special, due out Jan. 13. With such a catchy debut single, and Ronson’s impeccable penchant for fusing different genres together, Uptown Special is definitely the first of many records set to drop in 2015 that I just can’t wait to get my hands on.
Reading ‘The Bling Ring’ and hoping for the best – Marama Whyte
In 2013 I watched Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring and hated it. Still, I couldn’t help but be fascinated by the story of these teenagers who decided to break into the houses of various celebrities in 2008-9. At a secondhand bookstore recently, I picked up a copy of The Bling Ring by Nancy Jo Sales, a true crime non-fiction book based on Coppola’s film, which was in turn based on Sales’ Vanity Fair article, “The Suspects Wore Louboutins” (confusing, I know). From the small amount I’ve read so far, there is the distinct possibility that the book might actually be worse the film, but I’ll power through before making a final decision.
