How We Hype is a twice-monthly feature on Hypable where we tell you what we’re doing in fandom over the weekend!
Watching ‘Doctor Who’ – Laura Byrne Cristiano
Doctor Who season 9 debuts this Saturday on BBC America. I’ll be watching the first episode and hoping that this season, the writing and acting are all in sync.
Last year, the show didn’t really hit its stride until the latter half of the season. I’m cautiously optimistic for things this year. Now that the writers have a better sense of what Peter Capaldi brings to the table I think it will be better. Last year they were essentially writing blind.
Doing everything ‘Agent Carter’ – Danielle Zimmerman
It’s no secret that Peggy Carter is my girl. She’s my spirit animal. My love. She’s one of the most amazing characters I’ve ever come across and so I naturally accumulate as much Peggy-themed merch and stuff as I can.
A few weeks ago, I attended Wizard World Chicago and bought all the things (in addition to a few things that I already had sitting in my room unopened). Because life is cruel and unfair at times, I haven’t had a chance to enjoy said purchases thus far, but I plan to do so this weekend.
I will be cracking open the first trade for Operation Sin, happy sobbing through the pages of Marvel’s Agent Carter: Season One Declassified, thumbing through the special S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th anniversary comic issue that came out this past week, and constantly poking my Peggy Funko bobble head. It’s going to be great.
Seeing ‘The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials’ – Pamela Gocobachi
As a fan of James Dashner’s book series, naturally, I’ll be heading out to the cinema this weekend when The Scorch Trials hits theatres.

The team behind the film franchise did such a great job with the first film so I’ve got pretty high hopes for the second. I’ll also be interested to see how they set things up for the final instalment of the series!
Reading all the ‘Star Wars’ things – Michal Schick
I didn’t plan on being consumed by The Journey to The Force Awakens, the landslide of canon Star Wars material designed to carry fans into the new movie. But as it turns out, a girl plans and the galaxy laughs.
First I read the centerpiece of this literary smorgasbord – Aftermath by Chuck Wendig, a novel that follows mostly new characters after Return of the Jedi. (Verdict: Mediocre.) Then I read the first issue of Shattered Empire, the post-Jedi comic book, which mysteriously turned up on my iPad. (Verdict: Great, actually. Old characters, new characters, mysteries – you should read it.)
Then I found myself holding three Middle Grade books set around the original trilogy – The Weapon of a Jedi, which stars Luke, Smuggler’s Run, about Han and Chewbacca, and Moving Target, a Princess Leia story. And – oops – I read those too. (Verdict: Surprisingly good, with beautiful art by Phil Noto and awesome connections to The Force Awakens.)
And lest you think this journey is over, fear not. This weekend, I’ll be taking on Lost Stars by Claudia Grey, a young adult novel garnering great reviews for its trilogy-spanning tale of love and sacrifice. After that, maybe I’ll come back down to Earth.
…maybe.
Watching the original ‘Muppet Show’ –
After a spending two intense days this week attending Spring Awakening, Fun Home, and Hamilton on Broadway, I am turning my attention back to television this weekend and rewatching The Muppet Show in anticipation of the season premiere.
My well-worn VHS copy of the original The Muppet Movie, Twitter avatar posing with Kermit, and multiple saved Beaker gifs are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to my love of The Muppet gang. Dr. Teeth, Rowlf, Fozzie, Statler and Waldorf, Sam the Eagle, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, the Swedish Chef- I love them all.
One thing I do not care for regarding the Muppets’ return to glory is their submission to the current pop culture climate. Sure Pepé getting his friend request ignored gets a laugh out of me every time I see the promo. But reducing my beloved Kermit and Miss Piggy to a tabloid mugging couple is not what I signed up for.

Regardless, I am counting down the minutes until Kermit and the gang join the ABC primetime line up. But until Tuesday I’ll take a trip down memory lane with the original series and a pint of “frog ice cream” within reach. (Note: When I was younger I only ordered green mint chocolate chip ice cream, known as “frog ice cream” because it looked exactly like the cone of fly ice cream Kermit orders in The Muppet Movie.)
Reading ‘Hollywood Dirt’ by Alessandra Torre – Sonya Field
This weekend I’ll be diving into Hollywood Dirt by Alessandra Torre. It promises to be a good read with two characters from completely different backgrounds, clashing from the first time they meet.
Cole’s a Hollywood A-list actor who’s newly single, and Summer’s the town outcast looking to make a little extra cash. But despite Cole’s best efforts, Summer wants nothing to do with him. She’s been living in the same small Georgia town most of her life and isn’t going to change her attitude for anyone, especially not a Hollywood type.
This is my first time reading a novel by Alessandra Torre, so it should be interesting to explore a new writing style!
Previewing ‘Once Upon a Time’ season 5 – Tariq Kyle
This weekend I’ll be heading to ABC Studios to watch the premiere of Once Upon a Time season 5! Afterwards, I’m lucky enough to be able to interview show creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis to ask them about this upcoming season.
With so many characters returning this season and Emma going dark, I’m super excited to see what they have in store for us!
