How We Hype is a twice-monthly feature on Hypable where we tell you what we’re doing in fandom over the weekend!
Going to see ‘The Martian’ — Kristen Kranz
I’ve been anxious to see this movie since the first reviews came in. The first description of The Martian I ever heard was, “Remember that part in Apollo 13 where they have to figure out how to fit the square peg in the round hole? Yeah, that’s this ENTIRE movie.” That description has lingered in my mind ever since that moment.
I’ve been hooked by space adventure movies of late (Gravity, Interstellar, Prometheus, Guardians of the Galaxy, etc) and I’m sure this one will be no exception. I’m anxious to see everything The Martian has to offer, and I don’t think I’m going to be disappointed.
Also going to see ‘The Martian’ — Jen Lamoureux
This weekend I will be avoiding the rain by seeing The Martian starring Matt Damon. I recently listened to the book on Audible and I have to say I can’t wait to see the movie.

The story follows Mark Watney, an astronaut on the third manned mission to Mars. During a fierce storm that cuts the mission short, Watney is injured and thought dead. The crew leaves, and Watney discovers he is alone, and begins figuring out how to live on a hostile planet.
The novel is filled with Watney MacGuyvering (yes, that is a verb) all kinds of crazy things. I only hope the movie is half as inventive as the novel. The cast of the film includes Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Mara, Jeff Daniels, and Sebastian Stan.
Re-watching ‘Black Mirror’ — Tariq Kyle
This past week I decided to binge watch Black Mirror ever since I heard the news that ” target=”_blank”>Netflix picked it up for additional episodes.
I thought, “This looks interesting,” and boy was I underestimating it! I love that the seasons are all so short but each episode is a total and complete story! So this weekend I’ll absolutely be re-watching them just so I can experience it all again.
Reading ‘Six of Crows’ by Leigh Bardugo — Caitlin Kelly
Six of Crows has been a highly anticipated release this fall, and since hearing the book would be Ocean’s Eleven-like but in a grim fantasy world, I’ve been among those looking forward to it. I haven’t actually read the Grisha Trilogy, which this book takes place after, but that hasn’t hindered my enjoyment so far.
With the varying points of view informing the heist the main cast are recruited for, intrigue isn’t far away. And as someone who particularly enjoys audio books, I’ll be listening to this one over a rainy, fall weekend.
Reading ‘After You’ by Jojo Moyes — Sonya Field
Ever since I read Me Before You, I’ve been clamoring to hear the rest of the story. It was heartbreaking to fall in love with Louisa and Will only to have to let it all go. Even though it was easy to sympathize for Will, of course I hoped that love would conquer all. And it really felt like there had to be more to the story.
So I can’t wait to start reading After You to find out if Louisa moved on after Will and where life takes her. I thoroughly expect to get teary over After You but hope that I will be able to end it with a smile!
Watching episode 2 of ‘Quantico’ — Laura Byrne-Cristiano
I tuned into Quantico on Tuesday night when I came home late and was bored. I thought, “Well, it’s probably one of those don’t-think-too-hard-about-it procedural shows like Law and Order or Criminal Minds..” My guess was that it would be a let’s solve the case of the week kind of thing, all wrapped up in a tight bow as the rookie agents get assigned.

Boy was I wrong. Instead, I found myself transfixed on a show that busts stereotypes wide open, and has a How to Get Away With Murder type of flash-forward that left me wondering how it will all go down.
This one is definitely going on my must-watch-live list for Sunday nights. Sundays for me are turning into a great night for eclectic TV with Once Upon a Time, The Walking Dead, and now Quantico all on the same night.
Book shopping — Katie Awad
Gift cards are burning a hole in my wallet, so it’s about time to set them free! While browsing is always fun to do, this time I have some specific books in mind.
First up is Kill Your Friends by John Niven. It takes place in the ’90s at the height of the Britpop music scene. It’s also going to be a movie starring Nicholas Hoult!
I also want to get Ernest Cline’s second book, Armada, and see how this one compares to Ready Player One. I’ve heard great things about Mindy Kaling’s new book, too, so I might just make myself comfortable while I’m there. Grab a coffee, take a seat, and peruse the book a bit. The goal is to spend, spend, spend!
Watching ‘Con Man’ — Selina Wilken
It’s finally here. And by “it,” I don’t mean The Martian because I have to wait another three damn days before it’s out in theaters. But you know what isn’t internationally discriminatory? Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion’s web series Con Man.
I’m not gonna lie, I’m a complete sucker for meta like this. I donated to the Kickstarter campaign way back when it was first announced, and have been waiting (im)patiently ever since. Now, I have access to the first four episodes of Con Man, and I’m pretty sure I won’t be disappointed!
Related: Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion on why Con Man isn’t about Firefly
Con Man stars Alan Tudyk as a sci-fi actor living off the fame his cancelled cult sci-fi show Not Firefly (or… a name to that effect), while his old co-star Nathan Fillion is making it big in Hollywood. Guest stars include Felicia Day, Sean Astin, Wil Wheaton, and about half the Firefly cast. What’s not to like?!
Although it’s all played for comedy, it’s kind of cool for fans to get the opportunity to experience a (faux) convention from the other side of the curtain. And I like to think we can all pick up some dos and don’ts from this show!
