How We Hype is a twice-monthly feature on Hypable where we tell you what we’re doing in fandom over the weekend!
Watching ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ – Caitlin Kelly
I’ll be visiting fellow Hypable staff member Karen Rought this weekend, and we’ll be seeing the new Avengers film together. It’s the opening weekend in the United States, and who better to geek out about the awesomeness of the Avengers with than another Hypable staffer? I’ve been avoiding clips and spoilers, so I’m ready.
Jamming out at the Sunfest Music Festival – Brandi Delhagen
Who doesn’t love music festival season? Those who know me know I’m a huge live music junkie. Just last week I was three rows away from Breaking Benjamin, Rise Against and Five Finger Death Punch. However, this weekend will be special. I’m traveling a few hours away to West Palm Beach to check out a slew of bands. Just a few performing are Lenny Kravitz, Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Stone Temple Pilots (with Chester of Linkin Park singing lead vocals) and Iration. Hozier and Awolnation are who I look forward to the most, I purchased front of the stage passes for these two artists. This will be my third time seeing Awolnation and they’re definitely a must see. Aaron Bruno is a fantastic showman and gets the crowd going. Hozier on the other hand is a bit more mellow. His self-titled debut album is an absolute must listen! I am excited to see what type of stage presence he brings and when the tune to “Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene” hits my ears I will be in eternal bliss.
Exploring the world of self-published fiction – Selina Wilken
This weekend, I’m taking a break from the mainstream pop culture whirlwind I’m constantly caught up in these days (get these Avengers off me, damn it, I’m swatting superheroes like flies!), and diving into some interesting novels I’ve had recommended over the past few weeks. Alex Rudall’s self-published Inkers and C.K. Brooke’s The Duchess Quest (48fourteen) are just a few of the exciting new stories I’ll be reading and reviewing for Hypable. Keep writing, indie authors!
Reading ‘Ready Player One’ – Tariq Kyle
After being told about how great this book is by several people on Hypable’s Hype podcast I’ve finally started reading it! I’m only a few chapters in but I’m loving the concept already and I’m so excited to get to the geeky references people are raving about. I might be late on the trend but whatever!
Getting around to those pop culture resolutions – Kristen Kranz
I’m notoriously bad with New Year’s resolutions. I always make some grand declaration about some big and idealistic goal that I want to achieve… and then I usually completely forget about it by the time January drifts into February. To remedy that, I decided this year to make pop culture resolutions to see if they stick better. These all center around filling in some gaping holes in my pop culture education, gaps that I may or may not have relentlessly refused to admit existed in the past. They fill 3 categories and are as follows: watch all 3 Godfather movies, read The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and further feed my Sorkin obsession by finally watching Sports Night. I have yet to tackle even one of them, but this weekend I hope to dive headfirst into Sports Night and see where it takes me. Who knows? Maybe I’ll fly through it and start on one of the other two? (Doubtful, very doubtful.)
Watching ‘Avengers’ because I forgot everything that happened – Andrew Sims
It’s been three years since the last Avengers film, and that feels like a lifetime ago. I basically forgot everything that happened (I’d fail our “How well do you know The Avengers?” quiz miserably if I took it right now), so I’ll be re-watching Joss Whedon’s 2012 Marvel film before seeing Age of Ultron. On Tuesday night I was disappointed to find that the film is no longer on Netflix (it turns out it was removed in December), so I’ll have to go find it somewhere else. Isn’t this the ideal time for it to be on Netflix, Netflix? Ugh.
Waiting patiently for all of my friends to see ‘Age of Ultron’ – Jimmy Bean
Being able to see Age of Ultron three weeks before most of my friends in the USA has been both a glorious blessing, and a hideous curse. Along with the relief of knowing that the Avengers sequel is in good hands with Joss Whedon , I’ve also had to face hoards of jealous stares and my own self-imposed exile from my MCU-literate friends in an act to shield them from spoilers. Sure I’ve gotten to chat about major spoilers and plot points with a few wonderfully international Hypable colleagues, but a true fan needs more than just an hour and a half of discussion. Well, this weekend, I can actually go and hang out with my regular group without fear that I’ll accidentally spoil that part where Vision — what? You didn’t know The Vision was in this one? Ahhh dammit.
Getting pitch-slapped early by ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ – Marama Whyte
Forget about superheroes, Avengers: Age of Ultron was so two weeks ago. This weekend it is all about the women of Pitch Perfect 2. I can’t wait to catch up with my favorite weird and hilarious ladies. I’m so excited for this film but I try to avoid watching lots of clips in advance; I guess this time they have to win the World Championships and defeat some evil fishnet-clad Germans? Sounds onerous. Whatever ends up happening, I am sure the Pitch Perfect ladies will keep me as entertained as they did in their first outing. (And yeah, I guess there are some guys in it too but whatever, who’s watching this movie for them? Go ladies!)
