Star Trek and Fast & Furious are two iconic franchises Justin Lin has been lucky enough to be a part of. Now he’s going to tackle Hot Wheels.
That’s right, ladies and gents, the little toy cars from your childhood are going to make it to the big screen and it’s probably going to be awesome.
The Hollywood Reporter shares the news that Lin, who recently directed Star Trek Beyond, will be developing, directing and producing the film via his Perfect Storm Entertainment umbrella.
A live-action Hot Wheels movie has been in the works for more than a decade, with McG originally attached to direct. The initial premise was about a son who steals his father’s racecar and then later tries to reconcile with him.
Over the years, the project has changed plenty of hands and the original concept was wiped and the plan was to start from scratch with an edgier tone. If Lin is helming the project, you can bet the film will have that edge they’re looking for.
Hot Wheels first debuted in 1968, originally intended as toys for children. They’ve since become collectible in their own right, with limited edition models spread throughout the more mainstream versions. The brand is admittedly huge and will certainly have a pull on kids big and small.
The cars are from the Mattel toy company, which you may remember was recently in the headlines for another reason. Josh Gad and Amazon are teaming up for Toy Wars, a limited series that follows the real-life battle between Hasbro and Mattel as the two toy companies duked it out in the ’80s and ’90s.
Josh Schwartz is also attached to the show as writer and showrunner. He’ll not only be working on Runaways for Marvel and Hulu, but he’s taking on a Monster High movie, which is also a Mattel brand.
