Hidden Figures, the movie about three genius African-American women who helped NASA send a man into space, was the top performer at this weekend’s box office.
It’s the movie everyone’s been talking about, and we’re happy to say that Hidden Figures is now proving to be a huge hit with moviegoers, filling up theaters across the country and raking in an impressive $22.8 million.
This puts it above previous top performer Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It’s wonderful to see these diverse, important movies do so well, and Hidden Figures in particular is must-see viewing, as it sheds light on a previously obscured piece of American history.
Based on the book by Margot Lee Shetterly, Hidden Figures was directed by Theodore Melfi and stars Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monáe and Octavia Spencer as the real-life NASA employees Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, whose accomplishments during the space race of the 1960s have been largely overlooked — until now.
Accounting for its success, Fox domestic distribution president Chris Aronson says (via THR):
“It is a film for everyone regardless of age, gender or race, and effectively illustrates the power of the human mind and spirit. In these challenging times, its life-affirming message comes along at a perfect time.”
