For a while now we’ve heard that Warner Brothers seriously considered turning the Goblet of Fire book into two films because of its sheer length. But that’s not as surprising as this: Chris Columbus wanted to turn Book 1 into two films.
So where did he want to split it?
Columbus made the following comments in the Creating the World of Harry Potter documentary, which’ll be released on the Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince Ultimate Edition DVDs tomorrow:
Because I wanted the film to be a faithful retelling of the first book, we actually talked about creating a 3 1/2 hour film with an intermission. The idea of two films came up from day one. You know, we thought, ‘Well, maybe this could be separated into two films. End it with the first Quidditch match.’ Because I had just felt the material deserved it. However, we couldn’t become such a slave to the material that the film would suffer.
It’s interesting that Columbus wanted to stay as loyal to the film as possible. If that were the case from the start of the film franchise, we could’ve potentially seen 14 Potter films total. Yes, that’d be a heck of a lot.
