J.K. Rowling has announced that the new Harry Potter stage play The Cursed Child has expanded into “two parts.”

Update: A well-connected British journalist has confirmed The Cursed Child will be two separate shows, which will “play consecutive days in week and on same day [on the] weekends.” The play’s official Twitter account retweeted the tweet, further confirming the information:

Original story: “Due to the epic nature of the story we’ve been working on, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be in two parts!” Rowling tweeted Thursday afternoon.
The New Pottermore simultaneously released a story to further explain Jo’s announcement, but they didn’t clarify whether this news means it’s two separate shows or just two acts.
Pottermore did, however, get some new comments from the creators. “Obviously I loved it when we decided to tell this story in two parts,” Jack Thorne told Pottermore, “because I got to spend more time with the characters and what an honour that has been.”
Added director John Tiffany, “I’ve never worked on anything quite like this before. Usually in theatre you’re adapting existing material or creating an entirely new play. With the Cursed Child we have been given the unique opportunity to explore some of the most cherished books and beloved characters ever written, yet work with J.K. Rowling to tell a story from that world that no one yet knows — it’s exhilarating.”
Pottermore’s post appears to reference Cursed Child as one stage show, adding to the confusion of the announcement.
Perhaps there will be two shows running in London’s West End like what happened with Wolf Hall on Broadway earlier this year. Parts 1 and 2 of Wolf Hall were running simultaneously on Broadway and required two separate tickets.
John Tiffany’s comments about the play being “a story […] that no one yet knows” are very intriguing. We can’t wait to hear more!
Tickets for The Cursed Child go on sale this autumn, and the show will open next year. J.K. Rowling helped create the story and is a producer on the project.
What do you think of ‘The Cursed Child’ being expanded into two shows/parts?
This reminds us of the Deathly Hallows days. The book-to-film adaptation paved the way for future popular books to be split into multiple movies. Is Harry Potter about to start a new trend in the world of plays and musicals?
Needless to say, we now have many more questions about The Cursed Child.
