For weeks my best friend and I have been theorizing over Barry Allen and Harrison Wells. The most recent episode of The Flash (“The Nuclear Man”) has confirmed a portion of our suspicions. So let me start from the beginning.
We all know that Barry Allen / The Flash is set to disappear on April 25 in the year 2024. This piece of information has appeared numerous times since the series’ first episode back in October. The main question surrounding this article is why the scientist Harrison Wells is so interested in the date that the meta-human is set to vanish from the face of the earth.
Fans of the show are completely unaware of Harrison Wells’ past, with Joe stating not only that he does not like Wells but also that he cannot find any record of the individual prior to his move to Central City. It is this information that has led my friends and I to ponder the possibility that Harrison Wells is indeed Barry Allen.
We all know that there is talk about Barry Allen experimenting with time travel as the series continues to progress, and this is something that could be extremely important to the series.
We are now aware that the adult cells of Barry have been found at the scene where his mother was murdered so many years ago. For this to be possible we know that adult Barry must have, at some point in time, achieved time travel.
At the moment we are unsure as to how this occurred, although it seems logical that the date of Barry’s disappearance is in fact the day when he traveled back in time to his childhood. Barry has yellow lightning and the Anti-Flash whom we already know has red. With this in mind, it is possible for these individuals to have been the two streaks of lightning that Barry observed so many years ago.
The assumption needs to be made that The Flash was there to protect his mother and that he did not arrive in the past with the intention of killing her. The most popular theory at this point in time seems to be that Barry and the Anti-Flash were fighting when they gained the momentum required to travel in time, although The Flash may have tried to travel back in order to save his mother from death and his father from being sent to prison.
Are we all okay at this point?
There is still one point which must be addressed if this scenario truly has occurred: What happened to Barry Allen when he traveled back in time? Seeing as Barry has disappeared from 2024 and there appears to be no mention of his return, it seems viable that Barry Allen then continued life under an alias. This alias is likely the name Harrison Wells.
This image may seem hard to wrap your head around, but think about it for a bit. Wells appeared seemingly out of nowhere around the time in which Barry’s mother died, and he has shown an almost obsessive desire in knowing more about the young man. If Barry is truly Wells, we are also able to understand why the scientist continued with the particle accelerator testing although he knew that there were issues with the machine. Without the explosion he would never gain his powers, and without his powers he would never be able to accomplish the things that he is able to as The Flash.
I haven’t forgotten about the fact that from what audiences have seen red lighting is what follows Harrison Wells. This can be explained by the fact that he is working to steal his powers from the Anti-Flash and may point to Barry actually losing his powers when he travels back in time. (This may mean that Barry is actually the Anti-Flash as well as The Flash, but time will tell if this is true and what event caused Barry to turn from good to evil.)
