Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is the latest filmmaker to tease a LGBT character appearing in a major Hollywood movie, only to let us down.
Speaking with the Press Association while on the Guardians, Vol. 2 press tour recently, Gunn was asked if one day we could see a LGBTQ character in one of his super hero space movies.
He replied, “Absolutely. I would love to be able to. We might have already done that. I say watch the movie. Check it out. See what you think.”
Ooh, sounds like there’s a gay character in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, very exciting!
Problem is, critics who’ve seen the film didn’t spot any sort of gay thing going on with any of the characters. So what did he mean by “We might have already done that … I say watch the movie”?
He told Digital Spy, “What I meant to say is this: There are a lot of gay people in the world. There are a lot of bisexual people in the world. There are a lot of characters in the MCU. We’ve barely gotten to know the sexuality of any of those characters.”
He continued, “we know Gamora and Quill are interested in each other. That’s about the only sexual relationship that exists within the Guardians. We know Drax has a past with a wife so he’s got some sort of interest in women. But we don’t really know who’s gay and who’s not. It could be any of them.”

Once again we’re in a situation where a character might be gay, but might not, because we don’t want to offend anyone by making it real gay, so we’re just going to tip toe around it between now and the rest of time.
