The Guardians of the Galaxy are on their way to television, Disney XD and Marvel announced on Friday.
Production has begun on a Guardians of the Galaxy animated television series for a debut on Disney XD in 2015, the two companies confirmed in a press release after an announcement at New York Comic-Con.
According to the press release, “the series stars Peter Quill as Star-Lord, the brash adventurer who, to save the universe from its greatest threats, joins forces with a quartet of disparate misfits – fan-favorite Rocket Raccoon, a tree-like humanoid named Groot, the enigmatic, expert fighter Gamora and the rough-edged warrior Drax the Destroyer.”
Obviously that description doesn’t reveal any big details, but the important news is that all of the major heroes are involved.

Said Marc Buhaj, Senior Vice President, Programming and General Manager, Disney XD. “The movie and franchise quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. We’re looking forward to working with the great team at Marvel Television to deliver an engaging animated series that fans can enjoy each week.”
“This is a very exciting time for the Marvel Animation Studio as we get to explore the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe by developing the first-ever ‘Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’ animated series,” added Jeph Loeb, Head of Marvel Television. “After starring in the biggest movie of 2014, everyone wants more of Star-Lord and his crew – now they’ll get it.”
Here’s a first look at all five Guardians of the Galaxy in animated form thanks to EW:
The Guardians of the Galaxy will also be featured on Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.. The episode was also previewed at the panel today and showed the S.M.A.S.H. team meeting the Guardians.
At first there was some confusion about whose side they are on, until they teamed together to defeat the Krulls. The Avengers will also make a brief appearance in the episode.
Loeb also revealed plans for Ultimate Spider-Man season 3 where Spider-Man will be sent into alternate universes. This will cause him to meet different versions of himself. Including Spider-Man 2099 and Spider-Girl. Neither of which will believe that he’s on their side.
Hilariously, Spider-Girl will inform him that boys can’t be Spider-Man because they will only get themselves hurt. Apparently in her universe boys are constantly trying to copy her.
Will you watch the ‘Guardians’ on Disney XD next year?
In addition to this television series, a sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy is currently in development and set to hit theaters July 28, 2017.
