Grey’s Anatomy fans finally got their answer on the big question of Arizona’s survival. Now, Jessica Capshaw is breaking her silence on the topic. Warning: Spoiler alert!!
Throughout the season 9 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy “Going Going Gone” fans were lead to believe that Callie was mourning the loss of her wife. She was brought to tears at the mention of Arizona and Seattle Grace had brought in a new doctor to run Pediatrics. It wasn’t till the very end of the episode that it was revealed that Arizona had survived the accident. However, all was not well with her. Arizona had lost her leg and was wallowing in depression at home. Following the airing of the premiere Jessica Capshaw tweeted about the outcome.
I am infinitely delighted that Arizona lives…how she lives in this season will certainly be a wild ride. I thank you all for your support.

Since, she has also begun speaking with media outlets about what the future hold for Arizona. Capshaw told TV Guide that despite Arizona’s injuries in the season 8 she was shocked when Shonda Rhimes approached her about the amputation. She also talked about the fact that Callie was the person who made the decision to amputate her leg and how it will affect their relationship going forward.
Capshaw commented:
“It’s hard because they’re doctors, obviously, and I think that’s an important part of all this. Arizona is a doctor, so on some level medically, she understands what’s happening better than your average patient. It’s also her partner, so how do you come to terms with that? How do you come to terms with the worst thing that ever happened to you coming from the person who is supposed to be the best thing that ever happened to you? I think that’s going to be the journey for them.”
It looks as though Arizona will be so angry with Callie for the loss of her leg that she will need outside help to come out of her depression. Capshaw reveals that a new character will be helping her out. Bailey will also be there for Arizona in her time of need. While getting ready for this new journey for her character Capshaw spoke with amputees and found it all so shocking.
One of the main questions she had for them was:
“How do you spend each day almost as a new day because there’s going to be someone new that sees you for the first time? How do you not spend every day as, ‘Oh, look I’m an amputee!’ because that’s what people are looking at?” It’s a real question. Again, it’s so shocking, but it’s about the character getting right with herself. There’s a lot of stuff between here and her feeling good again.
Although Capshaw believes it will be a long journey for her character she does think that Arizona will ultimately end up back working at the hospital. Capshaw explains that to going back to work, “That’s the goal. How she gets there is what’s going to be interesting to watch.”
Where do you expect to see Arizona’s story go?
