Glee: The 3D Concert Movie opened nationwide on Friday, and Hypable’s resident Gleek has his thoughts on it in our exclusive review!
Friday night some friends and I packed in to my car and drove an hour out of town to enjoy Glee: The 3D Concert Movie. We are all pretty big Gleeks, and were anticipating this movie since it was announced right here on Hypable!
We got to our seats, put our 3D glasses on and got ready to experience the concert in movie form.
The movie opens with the big season 1 number “Don’t Stop Believing.” It’s a feel good song that you would expect to open the movie, but frankly, if you’re a huge fan seeing the movie, this song is getting a bit tired. They had so much music this past season why not start fresh!?
After the opening group number they went right in to some individual numbers. Artie, Lea, Puck, Finn, Mercedes all stood out. But it was Heather Morris as Brittany who really shined as a show-stopper. Her live daydream of Britney Spears’ “I’m A Slave 4 U” is maybe worth the entire $13 ticket! Heather Morris is definitely not the strongest singer (but then again neither is Britney Spears), but her dancing really brought the excitement of the movie concert to a whole new level.
This movie could almost be labeled as a documentary. We not only got to see the regular Glee cast on stage, but we got to know a few huge Gleeks, their stories, and the reason they became so attached to the show. We got an in-depth look at a little person, a gay teen, and a girl who struggled with Aspberger’s, all of whom relied on Glee to help them through the trials and tribulations of high school and society. These interludes between the concert performances added an unexpected touch of reality, compassion, and beauty that most Gleeks would recognize from watching the show. That being said, while these interludes in and of themselves are beautiful to watch, it feels that the movie strained to try to create this vibe and feel within the movie. There was a feeling of forced compassion by the time I walked out the door.
As for how the 3D works with the movie, I have to say, it doesn’t add much. It attempts to add the depth and feeling as if you are part of the audience, but doesn’t really succeed. The breaks between songs that focus on the Glee fans and their stories aren’t even in 3D. To avoid an eventual 3D headache, I took my glasses off during these breaks.
Either way, I definitely felt like I was participating in the American pop culture machine, and frankly, I didn’t care. It was a lot of fun, and definitely felt as if I was at the concert! There were several moments where I caught myself about to start clapping at the end of a song!
Overall, Glee: The 3D Concert Movie is a definite must-see for any Gleeks out there. Between Heather Morris and Darren Criss in 3D, there’s plenty for any Glee fan to see and watch. It’s a nice refreshing bit of original material that will keep fans over during the summer hiatus!
