The second part of Sue’s reign of terror continues and the New Directions hit a new milestone on tonight’s new episode of Glee. Check out our recap of “The Hurt Locker – Part 2.”
This episode picks right up where Part 1 left off – the end of Vocal Adrenaline’s “Whip It” performance. Sue announces that she will be judging the invitational since its her school – her rules. Sue tells everyone they need to have 12 members, the only show choir rules anyone remembers, and that the theme is “throwback.” Kurt also insists that they need to get Kitty back despite Rachel not wanting her to join.
Sue, still set to get Kurt and Blaine back together, shows Becky videos of Klaine in their Klaine shrine, which look like scenes from Glee, and says that she needs to get Kurt and Blaine together in a small confined space and be forced to look into each others eyes.
Later, Rachel tries to convince Kitty that she needs to join the glee club but Kitty resists saying that she isn’t interested in being a part of Rachel’s glee club when she’s just going to jump ship when she goes back to the Broadway stage. Kitty seems the most vulnerable we’ve ever seen her when she confesses she really misses performing.
Kurt and Blaine run into each other just before the Warblers go on to perform at the invitational before they head to a new elevator that was apparently installed without either of them noticing. Once inside, it’s clear that it’s Sue’s trap when Blaine opens up another door into the boys’ bathroom.
The Warblers go on without Blaine and perform “My Sharona.” Sue then goes on to hypnotize Sam to convince Rachel to perform three of the worst songs ever written: “Ascension Millennium,” “Dear Mr. Jesus,” and “Justified and Ancient.” Sam tries to pull more moves on Rachel which continues to confuse her. Despite being thankful for Sam’s help, Rachel insists that she won’t be using those songs because she needs to test her instincts.
Meanwhile in the “elevator,” Kurt and Blaine are growing sick of each other before a secret compartment opens up to reveal a dummy version of Sue on a tricycle reminiscent of Jigsaw from the Saw horror franchise. Let’s call her JigSue for now. JigSue insists that they kiss if they want to be released from the elevator but they don’t do it. JigSue leaves a box of grapes and wine and says the temperature will slowly raise in the elevator forcing them to take their clothes off.
In the middle of the night, Kitty hacks into Sue’s computer which has a folder of songs that make her emotionally vulnerable. She shows the list to Rachel in an attempt to pander towards Sue’s judging at the invitational.
Sam runs in to Spencer (remember him?) in the locker room where he tells him that he can’t be the quarterback. Sam admits that he has caught Spencer lingering around the glee club during rehearsals. Spencer admits that he wants to join the glee club but he’s stuck singing and dancing alone in his bedroom because he doesn’t want people to know that he’s gay. Sam pumps him up and gets him to decide to join.

In the glee club, Kitty picks up right where she left off when she tells the members to stop complaining about the song choices because Rachel has more talent in her little finger than anyone in this “stinking town.”
Back in the elevator, Blaine and Kurt are playing charades to pass the time. We find out that they once wanted to name their kid Fettucini Alfredo. “Little Feta!” says Blaine. As Kurt tries to guess during his turn, Blaine gives him the clue, “Dave eats this all the time. Like, a little too much if you ask me.” Kurt’s entire mood instantly changes as he sits up and says, “it’s so hot in here, I think I’m gonna be sick.”
Right on cue, JigSue returns to the elevator to torment them again. The doll starts gassing the elevator with a drug that is meant to increase blood flow to the male genitalia (JigSue’s words, not ours). Blaine and Kurt, under the pressure from a doll on a tricycle, look at each other as if they are considering giving in to its needs. Will Blaine cheat on his boyfriend to get out of a fake elevator?
The New Directions go on and perform “It Must Have Been Love,” to Sue’s shock as she sings along. While the New Directions perform, Blaine insists that they “make a promise that this means nothing,” and to “do what they have to do,” before they countdown and kiss. They look at each other with a shocked look at what had just happened before finally being released. Sue, completely freaked out, is listening as New Directions move on to the next song “Father Figure.”
We also flashback to Sue watching her presidential candidates concede elections: Dole, McCain, Romney. Their third and final song, “All Out of Love,” really seems to trigger Sue’s emotions as she sings along in the audience. We find out during this performance that Sue auditioned for Star Wars and Pretty Woman but was rejected.
At the invitational, it turns out the Warblers “really didn’t do a very good job,” and came in third. Vocal Adrenaline came in second, which means New Directions won first place. “I don’t know how they did because they were sitting in place on stools, singing in unison,” says Sue as she hands over the trophy.
Afterwards, Max from The Wanted, the lead sing from Vocal Adrenaline, is pissed that Will seemed to care more about Rachel Berry and the New Directions than their own performance. He basically threatens Will’s job before storming off. It really feels like Will’s days are numbered with Vocal Adrenaline. Afterwards, Sue returns the fork that Will left behind and says that if he ever forces her to clean up after him again she will “end him.”
Later, Klaine, who apparently don’t like to be called that (are you mad, fandom!?), confront Sue for kidnapping them in the “elevator” with JigSue. Blaine confesses that the plan backfired and it helped them get over each other – which obviously isn’t true if you saw the kiss and his awkward mannerisms as he tries to convince both Sue and himself that’s he being honest.
Back at the storage unit, Sue tells Becky that she has Klaine right where they want them. “Week 5, Klaine friends again. We still have six more weeks for scheming. Possibly seven depending on network preemptions.” Sue is basically breaking the fourth wall with this.
Glee has started to unravel a bit in these last episodes and probably for the better. A lot of fans have issues with Sue’s involvement, but a part of us also likes the over-the-top insanity that is happening with her and the rest of the characters on the show.
What did you think about “The Hurt Locker – Part 2”? Has Sue gone too far to the point that you can’t subscribe to Glee as a show any longer?
