Fox has announced that Glee‘s fifth season will be reduced down from the typical 22 episode order.
The fifth season of Glee has been reduced by two episodes, bringing the total episodes to 20.
Fox’s COO, Jee Early, has released a statement saying, “Glee is still a great property to have on our air. There have been some scheduling challenges … but what we see is still an incredibly popular show with a lot of time-shifting.”
There are a couple of factors as to why Fox decided to make this change.
The first reason could be due to the production halt after Cory Monteith’s death. This stopping of production could have caused Fox executives to cut the season short so that it didn’t air too far into the summer.
The second and more probable reason could be due to the low ratings that Glee consistently has gotten over the past few years. What used to be one of Fox’s big winners now only averages 4.2 million viewers and a 1.6 rating.
While we won’t be seeing those cut episodes, it has been revealed that Fox might film them and air them over the summer in order to promote the final season.
With much of the original cast once again becoming the only focus of the show, which is set exclusively in New York, Fox could see a ratings boost for its final season. All we know is, as of right now, we will have a sixth season and that means we’ll be able to get some closure at the end of this whole ride.
