This week Glee Chat host John Thrasher is writing the recap to the very dramatic and amazing episode 3×10, “Yes/No.”
Love is in the air as Glee returned last night with episode 3×10, titled “Yes/No.” Originally, this episode was titled “The Proposal,” but assuming there ended up being a little more than just 1 proposal last night, it was switched.
The episode opens with Mercedes admitting to the girls (and Kurt) that she and Sam had a summer fling at the lake over the summer. This transitioned in to the nearly identical number from Grease, “Summer Nights,” which included this awkward moment where Puck kissed Sam’s hand:
Not only was it identical, it finished with a split screen of Sam and Mercedes, just like the ending of the classic movie. See the two versions below:
After the very fun “Summer Nights” we see Becky walking down the halls of McKinley High School thinking to herself (in the voice of Oscar winner Dame Helen Mirren) with who she would be most compatible. After passing over Rory and Mike Chang, Becky sets her sights on Artie.
Emma joins Coach Beiste at the table during lunch where Beiste is eating 2 celebratory chickens. Beiste then says that she and Coach Cooter eloped over the holiday break! Emma can’t help but be upset, saying that she doesn’t think Will wants to marry her. This transitions in to Emma singing “Wedding Bell Blues.”
Will, realizing that he wants to propose to Emma, asks the glee club to come up with a proposal performance for Emma. Meanwhile, Sam continues to try to get Mercedes back, but she makes it clear that it was just a summer fling and that she has a new boyfriend.
Artie asks Sugar if she would like to work on a proposal performance for Mr. Shue. Sugar politely declines saying that she’s “abled” and wouldn’t want people to think that her arms are bigger than Artie’s legs. In the same scene where Artie was rejected, Becky runs up and asks Artie if he wants to go out on a date. Artie says yes.
Sam goes to Coach Beiste asking if he can get back on to a sports team in order to get his letterman jacket to impress Mercedes. Beiste directs him to syncronized swimming, coached by Roz Washington (Nene Leakes). Coach Washington, who has won a bronze “damn” Olympic medal in individual syncronized swimming, lets Sam know that if he pees in her pool she will “kill him.” The mullet hockey players slushy Sam. Mercedes tries to help him clean it off before Shane sees what’s happening and insists she come with him. As Shane and Mercedes are walking away, the viewers see Mercedes look back over her shoulder at Sam.
Artie proposes that Mr. Shue “lead with [his] hips” insisting that he has “rock star hips.” Artie, Mike Chang and Mr. Shue then perform “Moves Like Jagger / Jumpin’ Jack Flash” backed up by Blaine, Puck and Finn. Becky shows up to the performance and says that she loved “part one” of the date she and Artie were on. Artie, confused by what she means, says that this is all the date was, while Becky insists that part 2 will be at Breadsticks.
Finn and Mr. Shue go ring shopping for Emma at a local jewelry store. Mr. Shue then asks Finn to be his best man in his wedding saying that Finn has taught him “more about being a man than anyone [he has] ever known.” Finn accepts and then tells Mr. Shue that he has been talking to an Army recruiter because he wants to follow in his deceased father’s footsteps.
Rachel, Santana, Tina and Mercedes come up with the number “The First Time Ever” for the proposal performance while we the viewers watched each singer reflect on their loved ones (Finn, Brittany, Mike and Sam). The number ends with Mercedes walking off stage, and in to the bathroom. The other 3 follow her in where Mercedes admits that she still has a thing for Sam. Rachel says she should follow her heart because maybe there’s “still a spark.”
Mr. Shue invites Emma’s parents over to ask them if he can marry Emma, hoping for their blessing. Emma’s father says “no.” Both parents then go in to Emma’s issues with OCD and the fact that she can’t handle babies, runny noses or diapers.
Meanwhile in the choir room, the glee club have a “Beckyvention” with Artie saying that they want to know what his angle is. The scene cuts away to Artie and Becky at Breadsticks getting to know each other. Becky’s favorite movie is Schindler’s List and she wants to be 5’10” when she grows up. The scene cuts back to the choir room where Artie puts everyone in their place for being judgmental about him and Becky being friends.
Finn walks in to Mr. Shue’s classroom where Mr. Shue, Emma, Burt and Finn’s mom are all there unexpectedly. Burt says that Mr. Shue told them about Finn’s interest in enlisting and that they should be a part of the decision making process. Finn explains that he wanted to be tested and become a man like his father by following in his footsteps. Finn’s mom, with tears and a quivering voice, then tells Finn that though his father was in the military, he was actually dishonorably discharged, turned to drugs, and died as a result of an overdose. Finn, overwhelmed with emotion asks his mother why she hadn’t told him yet and walks out of the room.
Becky then approaches Artie to tell him that they are going to “do it” at his place on Friday and that she just sent him a taste of what he’s going to get on Friday night, which appeared to be a scandalous photo of herself. Artie then approaches Sue asking for help with the situation. Sue suggests that he treat Becky like any other person so that she can move on and date someone worth her time.
Back at Shuester’s house, he and Emma have a talk about her OCD and whether she would be able to handle a marriage and children. Will says that it’s hard to live with her “disease” and that some days it seems “hopeless.” Emma insists that this is who she is and if he doesn’t like it, he needs to let her know the sooner the better.
Meanwhile, Kurt, Rachel and Finn are at dinner talking about their futures. Finn says that he thought that everyone was going to get out of Ohio. He goes on to say, “Why can’t I have something in my life that’s special; that means something?” Rachel then transitions in to “Without You.” Artie asks Mr. Shue which performance he’s going to use. He says he needs more time to consider the choices. In the hallway afterwards, Sam tells Mr. Shue that he has an idea.
Will shows up at Emma’s office and asks if she has a second. “We Found Love” begins before she takes his hand. Will guides Emma down the hallway where 2 students, Coach Beiste and Coach Sylvester all hand Emma a single white rose each. Will and Emma enter the pool area where the glee club and several others begin a huge synchronized swimming routine that lead up to Will emerging in a white tuxedo, walking on a transparent platform on water. He jumps in the pool and then up to Emma and asks her to marry him. She says yes! Kurt and Rachel celebrate together off to the side.
Artie then approaches Becky about Friday night. He tells her that he hasn’t been clear with her – that he really likes being her friend but he doesn’t think they should date. Becky says she gets it and walks away. We hear more of Becky’s inner dialogue where she thinks Artie won’t date her because she has Down’s Syndrome. She tries to hold in tears as she walks down the hallway. In Sue’s office, Sue gets ice cream, a couple of spoons, and turns on Lifetime. She also insists that she and Becky are going to get through their recent rejections together.
Rachel meets Finn in the auditorium where he asked her to meet him to talk about something. Rachel believes that she’s there to talk about Finn’s Dad, but Finn insists that he wanted to talk about the two of them. Finn asks Rachel to promise not to say a word until he’s done. He then starts talking about how he used to wonder if he will be the man that his father was, but now stays up all night worried that he’ll become who he was. He tells Rachel that she’s a big gold star and for some reason she has chosen to let him love her. He says that if he can convince Rachel to continue to let that happen, he’ll know that everything will be okay. He pulls out a ring gets down on one knee and says, “Rachel Berry. Will you marry me?”
Rachel looks stunned, and the scene cuts to black without Rachel giving a yes or no.
