The latest Girls season 5 trailer seems promising, but there is still one giant problem.
Girls season 5 premieres in just about a month’s time and as HBO’s latest trailer hints, not much has changed. Everywhere you look there is new clothes, new hair, new boys, new locations, but the same core group has changed very little since season 1. In season 5, however, the ensemble may finally get in touch with who they are and step away from what they are not.
What does that mean for each character when the show returns? In Hannah’s case it seems to mean bearing a bit more skin. (If that is even possible.)
Has Elijah found love? – PRO
Blink and you miss it, but Elijah seems perfectly smitten in the latest Girls trailer. Aside from Elijah’s unbridled happiness and the removal of his ex-beau Pal, there is one huge upside this impending change — the appearance of guest star Corey Stoll. Whatever Stoll’s involvement entails for the series, we are here for it.
Shoshanna heads to Japan – PRO
“Sometimes I think about Japan and I’m like, ‘Did I create this country in my mind?'” Now that you mention it, that particular street in Japan is exactly what we expected the inside of Shoshanna’s brain to look like. Not only will we see Shoshanna, hopefully, blossom while she is away from the rest of the Girls trio and Ray, but we get to take Aidy Bryant along for the trip! Shoshanna choosing her career over the comforts of home and a shot at romance was definitely a highlight of season 4. Her drastic move signals at least one storyline we hope works out for the best.
Hannah has her head on straight – PRO
Or at least she seems to for now. What drives Girls to such extreme places is the unpredictability of what each character believes will give them their best life. Watching them trip, stumble, and face plant in public is what makes the show feel real. But what you want from life isn’t always what you need, as Hannah found out in Iowa, at GQ, and in her relationship with Adam.
Thanks to all of those past experiences, Hannah finally has stability in her life with Fran. Routine has never quite mixed with her personality, but perhaps it is exactly what she needs to figure out what makes her feel whole. Even without Jessa, Marnie, and Shosh around all the time, Hannah still gets a healthy dose of their tough love. And who doesn’t need that every now and again?
Marnie is getting married – CON
Last season, and the season before, and probably in the seasons before that, Marnie claimed her spot at the bottom of the Girls totem pole in terms of likability. Is season 5 finally ready to save Hannah’s best friend? While it is high time for Marnie to have a compelling storyline, unfortunately there is only one way to make that happen — we have to sacrifice more time to Marnie’s story. For season 5 that means more Desi, more music, and a wedding with, you guessed it, bridezilla Marnie.
It’s no secret that Desi is the worst boyfriend/collaborator ever, but he unintentionally did Marnie a huge favor. When he ditched their showcase at the conclusion of last season, he pushed her to perform solo and prove to herself that she does not need a man to have a career. Hopefully, that is a launching pad for Marnie to take back some control of her life. But so help us if the line, “When you’re married…” comes out of her mouth when dishing unsolicited advice this season.
Some extra goodies
•Marnie may be the worst, but at least we know where she gets it from! Expect to see her mom again in season 5.
•Speaking of parents, the Horvaths are sticking around for another year of Hannah’s wild and crazy life in New York.
•And don’t worry, for better or for worse, Kylo Ren Adam is still around.
Girls season 5, episode 1 premieres Sunday, February 21 at 9:00 p.m. ET.
