New lives are starting all over the place on tonight’s Girls season 4 finale. Find out where they all end up in our recap!
Hannah’s maturity in stressful and less than ideal situations has been tested time and time again throughout Girls‘ fourth season. Tonight, she finally hits a wall. There is no line that Hannah can draw between her home life and her adult responsibilities. Leaving yet another room of children unattended, Hannah sits outside trying to push her troubles back down to a manageable level.
Perhaps she is not ready to take on a true real world job. Everyone has something going on at home. Whether it’s mounting debt, an ill parent, or a DVR that isn’t working, anything can set someone off. But at a school in front of a room full of young minds, Hannah needs to learn how to excuse herself or keep her cool. But for now, Fran is there to rub her back and tell her everything is going to be alright.
But her troubles that were bothering her at school are nothing compared to coming home and finding your ex-boyfriend’s sister trying to give birth in a bathtub to a premature baby.
Abigail, Shoshannah’s exciting new employer or Wes Anderson’s latest film? You decide! Marketing, social media, liaison between Japan and America! Except the part where Shosh would have to relocate to Japan, the job sounds ideal. Scott on the other hand flat out refuses to let Shosh take a job that would send her halfway around the world. After all, you can’t send the woman you may fall in love with soon to take a job that may or may not be a great opportunity. It’s a very gray area.
But Hermie, of all people, is able to add a little color to Shosh’s world. He read Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In that encourages women not to shy away from chances to lead. This is her “lean in” moment, taking what is hers, if Scott is smart he’ll be at the airport waiting for her.
Marnie and Desi meet Spike Jonze, aka, their record label owner for a meeting at Ray’s coffee house. While marriage is the only thing on Marnie’s mind, Desi passes it off as “the only option to show is commitment.” The record owner doesn’t do much better as he reveals how poorly his separation is going. But back to business! As they leave to prep for their showcase, Desi takes care of the bill and gives Ray a little bit more than a tip. But his offer to connect on a more spiritual level backfires when Ray rips his act apart.
Distressed denim and eyeliner, do not hide the fact that beneath the facade, Desi is not the man that Marnie deserves. Instead of using her to stroke his own ego, Desi should be treating her with respect.
Adam barges into Caroline’s home birth and aggressively calls shenanigans. Hannah’s meek voice is not going to convince anyone to move to the land of Western medicine, but Adam’s might. Or he will pass out. The latter is what occurs after Jessa bravely sticks her head in the bathtub and sees a foot. With an ambulance too far out, Hannah, Adam, Jessa, and Laird carry Caroline to the hospital.
Speaking of a “Lean In” moments, Marnie takes hers after Ray pushes her to perform solo after Desi bails on their showcase. As Marnie sings the rest of the world seems to fall into place. Shosh practices her chopstick skills to prepare for Japan, Jessa decides to become a therapist, and Hannah has her first truly emotional reaction to something this season.
Adam confesses to missing and needing Hannah in his life, but she has taken a plunge into a new world without him. One that doesn’t feel like drowning and gasping for air every chance you can get. Looking at her parents unhappiness pushes her further away from her old self and six months later she walks hand in hand with Fran down the street.
Welcome to the world, Jessa-Hannah Bluebell Poem. You are in for quite the ride.
