Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life hits Netflix tonight! Let’s get through the final season before the show picks up eight years later!
Here we go! Hypable’s guide to Gilmore Girls is here to review and rehash everything that happened in the show’s seventh and final season. This is a highly contested season in the Gilmore canon.
The good parts of season 7 do not outweigh the bad. This is the season where creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and husband Dan Palladino stepped away from the show. It is one that sent Lorelai and Christopher to a place that even the biggest fans of that pairing had issues accepting as canon.
But it is the final piece of the Gilmore Girls puzzle we have to put in place before the series returns. Before you proceed, check out Hypable’s reviews of seasons 1-3 and 4-6!
Let’s get to it!
‘Gilmore Girls’ season 7
The season gets off to a rocky start as we open our eyes, a little hungover and groggy, next to Christopher in bed. What happened to take us to such a dark place? Well, Luke hiding his daughter for a few months and postponing his wedding for a few more set most of this in motion.
Luke realizes this just a tad too late and rushes to whisk Lorelai away on a wedding retreat. She drops the bomb of her dalliance with Christopher and Luke takes out his aggression on Chris’ face.
Married life is not treating Lane well, either. In the second of unfortunate storylines of season 7, Lane’s first night in the sack with Zach leaves her pregnant with twins. Christopher and Lorelai try to integrate themselves into Rory’s life, while Luke does the same with April.
With her boyfriend away in London for the year, Rory turns to new friends Lucy and Olivia. The artsy juniors bring back Marty, whose love affair with Lucy causes some unnecessary tension in the new trio.
Lorelai and Christopher jet off to Paris to drop Gigi off with her mother. And they return with more than a model of the Eiffel Tower. Two rings a certificate now bind them through good times and bad.
The Gilmore family does not have a great track record when it comes to last minute vow celebrations. This one in particular pits Lorelai and Christopher at odds as they both realize they are not exactly high school sweethearts anymore.
Speaking of tension, Anna is not comfortable sharing April with Luke. However, Luke is not going down without a fight and decides to fight for custody. And speaking of sharing, Luke and Christopher duke it out through the town square’s Christmas display. Come on, boys! Pull it together.
Emily senses tension between the love birds and offers some unsolicited advice to Lorelai that may be the push she needs to examine her relationship.
Unfortunately, Richard suffers a second heart attack that sends the entire family into crisis mode. Emily begins to unravel at the thought of going on without Richard in her life. This is certainly a moment that is more painful to watch ahead of the giant loss we know is coming in the revival.
Lorelai begins to realize that there is only one person who is in her life through the good and the bad– Luke. He takes care of everything he can when Richard gets sick, still behaves cordially (at least in front of her), and still tries to do the right thing.
Emily leans on Lorelai for support when Richard’s affairs need to get in order. Finally, after years and years of expressing disappointment, Emily extends an olive branch to her daughter and praises her accomplishments. Lorelai does the same favor for Luke and drafts a character reference for Luke’s custody battle.
Disappointments pile on Lorelai and Rory courtesy of the men in their lives. Christopher calls it quits on their marriage and Logan loses everything in his first solo business venture. Makes you wonder if they were actually dating versions of the same man…
The Gilmore ladies hit the road for Mia’s wedding and along the way they come to accept that though the past may be rocky, they’ve come a long way since Lorelai left Hartford. Lane has her twins and Emily reveals she has a crush on Will Smith.
The final few episodes tease Luke and Lorelai’s undeniable chemistry is at work again. Through the hay bale maze and into karaoke, the inn and diner owners meet each other halfway.
Rory crosses one final stage and leaves behind a Gilmore legacy at the Daily News and a future planetarium. Logan makes one final plea for Rory by offering her a ring. But Rory ultimately decides to forge her own path in the world. Since it is 2007, that path kicks off on Obama’s campaign trail.
Before she leaves the town gathers under a makeshift tent. Luke took charge of the surprise party to celebrate not one, but two Gilmore girls.
Farewell, Stars Hollow. We’ll see you SOON!
