Lonely Men do not like the new Ghostbusters trailer starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon.
As first noted by ScreenCrush, the trailer for the 2016 all-lady Ghostbusters movie has amassed over 500,000 down votes on YouTube, making it the video platform’s most-disliked trailer. It has just over 200,000 up votes.
In terms of overall down votes on YouTube, the Ghostbusters trailer currently sits in between Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass” and Justin Bieber’s “What Do You Mean?” music video. However, these two music videos (and many others in the list) have a significantly higher number of up votes than they do down votes. No other movie appears in the list.
While many were not impressed by the trailer for reasons that don’t involve the gender of the stars on screen, it’s assumed that the majority of down votes come from a bunch of Lonely Men who don’t like women taking on lead roles in the Ghostbusters reboot. This has been an “issue” that’s been voiced by a lot of people (Lonely Men) over the past couple years as Ghostbusters has continued through development.
Browsing through the comments on the trailer you’ll find quite a few sad remarks which prove the assumption. One person links to a store where you can buy bleach (…because they would definitely prefer to drink bleach instead of watching this movie). Another asks, “Did Melissa McCarthy get famous from being fat?” “When are people going to learn that women aren’t funny?,” added another guy. “GhostBusters — Fat Dyke Edition,” said one more.
With comments like these, it’s clear why the trailer has received so many down votes. Misogyny.
Ghostbusters hits theaters this July. Only one trailer has been released in the United States, so hopefully another one arrives soon — and pleases more people than the first one did. However, that may depend on if Lonely Men stop being Lonely Men. (Spoiler: They won’t.)
Watch the Ghostbusters trailer below — and maybe give it an up vote.
