This week’s newly-branded Geek Gifts gets sticky with a necklace to relieve the “Your Bucky” feels and a Mortal Kombat laptop decal.
Geek Gifts, formally Fandom Fix, is a weekly feature article written by Donya Abramo and Karen Rought. With every installment, the duo picks out a fandom-related item they’ve recently come across and describes it in loving detail. There are no product placements here. We only talk about items we’re excited to share with the rest of the world.
Your Geek Gifts come in a variety of ways, be it jewelry, clothing, games, or something else entirely. We strive to remain unbiased, and we plan on constantly expanding our own horizons as we search for new and interesting pieces. The only requirement is that it must give us the burning need to open our wallets and throw money at its creator.
I’m a girl of very simple pleasures. A nice, warm cup of tea, a good book… my heart being ripped out of my chest by Marvel over two damn words.
Most Marvel fans will have seen the D23 coverage by now — and Captain America fans will have poured over every single breakdown of the trailer. Right? Or is that just me? Regardless, I thought my emotional state in Winter Soldier would be the pinnacle for Marvel movies. Surely nothing could wreck me quite so beautifully as every single scene between Steve and Bucky?
Oh, how wrong I was. Apparently all it took was Crossbones saying “Your Bucky” to Steve, and I spent my weekend a quivering ball of emotions, yelling at anyone that would listen that the Russos are taking a leaf out of Pixar’s book — running their entire empire on the tears of their audiences, until all that’s left is a shell of your former self.
But I digress. This week’s item is in honor of my spiral into a pit of Steve and Bucky feelings, combining both of their symbols into a beautifully crafted necklace. This is the larger of their two options, if only because there is no universe in which I can pretend that I don’t care a lot about these characters, so I might as well wear it loud and proud.
Make it a statement piece to any outfit, or to broadcast to others that you’re not okay and need emotional support up to, during, and every second after Civil War comes out.
If you know me at all, you know of my undying love for Mortal Kombat. The video game was great and all (I mostly watched other people play video games when I was a kid, instead of playing them myself), but I love the cinematic masterpiece that is the movie adaptation.
Well, “cinematic masterpiece” may be stretching it, but it’s widely agreed that Mortal Kombat is the first — and perhaps one of the only — video game movies that actually worked. And it turned 20 years old yesterday.
But enough about nostalgia. Let’s talk about something modern. Like this amazing laptop decal sticker. This is definitely video-game-Sub-Zero, but that’s neither here nor there. It’s an awesome rendition in full color on quality vinyl. My favorite part of the description is, “This graphic will last longer than your computer!” #Truth
I’m also a sucker for those graphics that incorporate the glowing apple icon into them, and this one makes it look like Sub Zero is forming a ball of ice into the shape of an apple. I bet he doesn’t have to stand in line all night for the next iPhone.
Would you go for the Captain America/Winter Soldier necklace or the ‘Mortal Kombat’ sticker?
