A new report suggests that Nintendo’s forthcoming console Nintendo Switch may have an expanded Virtual Console which’ll offer GameCube classics.
Eurogamer is citing three sources who tell them Nintendo Switch’s Virtual Console will include GameCube support, and that Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, and Super Smash Bros. Melee are already finished being ported. The original Animal Crossing is also in the pipeline “for potential release,” according to the report.
If true, it’ll be the first time a Nintendo device’s Virtual Console includes support for GameCube games. Currently, the Wii U’s allows you to purchase and play NES, SNES, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo 64 titles.
The ability to play GameCube games would be a very enticing selling point, especially if they’re including such classics like Super Mario Sunshine and Luigi’s Mansion (the latter was a launch game for the ‘Cube).
One reason for bringing GameCube games to the Nintendo Switch is “the desire within Nintendo to continue making Super Smash Bros. Melee easily playable,” according to Eurogamer. “15 years on from its initial release, Melee is still a hugely popular game in the eSports scene, and a regular major draw at huge competitions such as Evo.”
Nintendo Switch is set to be released in March 2017, with more details about the console coming in January. Switch lets you to play full games on a television or bring them on the go. New games for Switch include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (which is also coming to Wii U) and what looks to be an updated version of the Wii U’s Mario Kart 8. I personally have a love/hate relationship with the Virtual Console. I think Nintendo should be creating epic new Mario’s, Animal Crossing’s, etc instead of porting and HD-ing so many old hits. The amount of nostalgia they’re pushing at us is high and it feels uninspired.
That said… I can’t wait to play Super Mario Sunshine and Animal Crossing again.
