Colplay’s Chris Martin meets George R.R. Martin in Game of Thrones: The Musical. What in Westeros could go wrong?
The hilarious skit, which was created for the U.S. debut of Red Nose Day, features the triumphs and tragedies of Coldplay as they attempt to bring their latest work of genius to the stage. In a mock-umentary narrated by Liam Neeson (who else?), a myriad of Game of Thrones cast members are recruited by Chris Martin to join in the epic rock-opera version of their wildly popular HBO series.
But not everyone is terribly enthusiastic.
“It’s the worst idea I’ve ever heard,” Diana Rigg proclaims, in true Queen of Thorns fashion.
In fact, the workshop of the full 16-song score for Game of Thrones: The Musical initially goes poorly – though Iwan Rheon (Ramsay Bolton) is on board from the beginning. But the day is saved by Kit Harington (Jon Snow) who recruits the cast with food.
The truly epic workshop includes Harington singing “Wildling” to Rose Leslie (Ygritte), a suitably creepy duet between Rheon and Alfie Allen (“If there’s one thing Theon might have taught ya’ / It’s once I’ve caught ya’ / You will be tortured…”) and a group performance of the heart-and-show-stopping number, “Red Wedding.”
“You don’t mess around with Walder Frey,” Martin sings, which is true, though he also says that the wedding in question was that of “Robbie Stark” – which it was not. (Poor Edmure.)
With the success of the workshop, Emilia Clarke changes her tune and gamely records her song “Rastafarian Targaryen.” Nikolaj Coster-Waldau also comes in to sing “Closer to Home.”
“It’s the first romantic ballad about incest in Coldplay’s career,” Neeson observes.
And of course, Game of Thrones: The Musical would not be complete without Tyrion Lannister. Actor Peter Dinklage shows up in a studio to sing the triumphantly bluesy number “A Man for All Seasons (Still Goin’ Strong).”
Alas, just when all the pieces appear to fall into place, Game of Thrones: The Musical fails to pass the muster of George R.R. Martin. (He “did go absolutely crazy,” Neeson notes.) But Chris Martin has plenty of other ideas – including “Taken: On Ice,” which intrigues Neeson.
Game of Thrones: The Musical was produced for Red Nose Day, which raises money for children around the world. The three-hour fundraiser aired last night on NBC, but donations are accepted year-round.
Game of Thrones season 5, episode 7, “The Gift,” airs on Sunday, May 24 at 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
