HBO is revealing the Game of Thrones season 7 release date today on Facebook live. We just need to be patient.
Update: Game of Thrones season 7 will premiere on July 16!
Today on Facebook Live, Game of Thrones fans can tune in to watch a gigantic block of ice melt — with occasional help from what seems to be an enormous blowtorch. (But may be a dragon.)
Though this feels like a very strange psychological experiment, it’s actually HBO’s reveal of the Game of Thrones season 7 release date.
A dark placard is suspended in the huge block of ice, which presumably bears the release date on its opaque surface. But until enough fans type “Fire!” into the comments, the date will remain a mystery.
So, like Planet Earth and the polar ice caps, we’re just sitting here waiting for the thaw.
Interspersed with the blasts of fire are messages from the cast, picking sides along the lines of ice and fire. The actors urge fans to participate in the, ah, firestorm, though by this point it seems we may need to call in a giant.
It’s not hard to suss out the symbolism of the Game of Thrones season 7 release date stunt. The ice and fire imagery couldn’t be clearer — and in fact, the same visuals were used on a recent teaser poster from HBO. With Daenerys and Jon seemingly representative of the forces of fire and ice, it seems that Game of Thrones is setting up for some kind of collision between the two distant heroes.
But will it be the violent assault kind of collision? Or will Dany and Jon perhaps unite in a decidedly sexier way?
Of course, this is Game of Thrones. It could easily be both.
The finally melted block reveals not only the Game of Thrones season 7 release date, but an incredibly atmospheric new trailer for the season. The “great war,” it seems, is finally here.
