MMA fighter Conor McGregor has been cast in a presumably violent role on Game of Thrones season 7.
McGregor is legendary in the mixed martial arts world, and has won multiple Ultimate Fighting Championships. Now it seems that the fighter’s talents will be be portrayed in a very different medium.
UFC president Dana White recently revealed that McGregor has been cast in Game of Thrones season 7 on an episode of Fox Sports Live.
“I knew a few months ago they were interested in putting him in the show,” White says. “I’m glad he did it. It’ll be great. The show’s huge, it’s awesome.”hips. Now it seems that the fighter’s talents will be be portrayed in a very different medium.
Rolling Stone also reported an anonymous source suggesting that Conor McGregor has been in HBO’s sights for some time.
“It’s been agreed that McGregor will appear in one of the remaining two seasons of Game of Thrones,” the source told Belfast Live. “He was headhunted, as it were, by HBO, as one of the Game of Thrones directors is a huge UFC fan. They believed that he would be a perfect fit for the show.”
As has become standard for Game of Thrones castings, McGregor’s specific role has not yet been revealed. But the world of Westeros and beyond certainly has no shortage of violent men, capable of wreaking havoc with their bare hands (not to mention what happens when you give them a sword.)
The role may even be one that fans of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire have not yet met. As the HBO epic fantasy series steamrolls past the material in Martin’s published novels, it’s easy to imagine a new, brutally violent character being plucked into the TV series before his debut in the books.
Update: According to our friends at Watchers on the Wall, Conor McGregor will has been cast to play a pirate on Euron Greyjoy’s ship, Silence. This might say more about Euron’s role in Game of Thrones season 7 than anything else — the fearsome Greyjoy uncle had a tendency to disappear last season — but it’s good to be able to place McGregor’s brief appearance in the wide spectrum of the series.
