House Tarly will be expanding in Game of Thrones season 6, as Freddie Stroma joins the cast as Dickon Tarly.
As Samwell’s younger brother, Dickon should be in an interesting — and probably antagonistic — position in Game of Thrones season 6. Strong, athletic, and manly, Dickon is the polar opposite of the soft-hearted, soft-bodied Sam, who grew up as a perpetual disappointment to their father.
The difference between the brothers proved so great that their father, Lord Randyll Tarly, exiled Sam to the Night’s Watch and appointed Dickon his heir. As such, Dickon is a crucial piece in the puzzle of Sam’s abusive childhood, so it will certainly be fascinating to see the brothers reunite in Game of Thrones season 6.
Freddie Stroma has earned acclaim for his role as the selfish, asinine suitor on Lifetime’s Bachelor pastiche, UnReal. Stroma also played Cormac McLaggen in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – perhaps an indication that the actor will be digging in to his established “entitled dolt” toolbox on Game of Thrones as well.

The casting of Dickon Tarly fuels further speculation on the rest of Sam’s family, particularly in regard to his domineering father Randyll. Ian McShane’s role has still not been revealed, but Lord Randyll — described in call sheets as a “severe and intimidating” man who “demands martial discipline in the field and in his home” — could certainly fit the bill.
But there will be a few bright spots in Sam’s uncomfortable return home. Casting notices call for a “sweet” and “adoring” mother, as well as a “friendly” sister, so hopefully Sam the Slayer (and Gilly) will have a few allies in his corner while facing his father and Dickon in Game of Thrones season 6.
Game of Thrones season 6 will air on HBO in Spring 2016.
