New promos and features give fans a hint at what’s happening onscreen and behind the scenes in Game of Thrones season 5.
A new teaser for the upcoming season was released tonight, emphasizing the uncertainty of leadership in Westeros and beyond. While that predicament is not exactly a new one in the scope of Game of Thrones, it does seem that the straits of those lusting for power are growing distinctly more dire as time goes on.
It also seems clear that, while transplanted unwillingly from his spider’s nest of King’s Landing, Varys is perfectly capable of spinning up webs across the Narrow Sea. Whether or not those plans hold up in the face of dragon fire… well, that’s another subject entirely.

Next up, an “Invitation to Set” video offers an overarching look at the production and plot of Game of Thrones season 5.
Though characters will begin to overlap and once-distant storylines converge, it seems like this season of the epic fantasy series will lose none of its breadth and intrigue.
“It keeps getting bigger and bigger,” showrunner David Benioff notes, looking frankly rather exhausted. “It means more people dying. It means we’re getting closer to the endgame.”
Speaking of dying — or perhaps more accurately, of killing — another video introduces viewers to three significant new characters joining Game of Thrones season 5. Lords and ladies, meet the Sand Snakes of Dorne.
On the subject of the Sand Snakes, weapons master Tommy Dunne discusses the new weapons he created for the three bastard princesses in a new artisan video.
Production designer Deborah Riley also offers her input on the series’ incredibly intricate set design – particularly that intriguing arena which has featured prominently in other promotional material.
Riley emphasizes that Game of Thrones does as much work “in-camera” as possible. Creating immersive, 360 degree sets minimizes the need for computer-generated scenery, to a degree that is unprecedented in most television production.
Finally, the luckiest guy in the world artist Will Simpson offers a new look at an element of production on Game of Thrones which fans may never have considered.
Game of Thrones season 5 will premiere on Sunday, April 12 at 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
