The countdown to winter begins as HBO announces the Game of Thrones season 5 release date.
According to the network, Game of Thrones season 5 will debut on April 12, 2015. The new season will air, as always, in the 9:00 p.m. Sunday evening slot.
Based on George R.R. Martin’s epic A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novels, Game of Thrones season 5 will bring viewers back to the brutal world of Westeros and beyond for ten more episodes. The new season will see families scattered, alliances forged and destroyed, questions of loyalty and honor debated, and probably lots of naked people.
The Game of Thrones season 5 release date is slightly later than usual this year (the latest date since season 1, in fact) but in keeping with the established Spring debut. Barring any off-weeks, the season will conclude at the end of May.

Promotional material for the upcoming season has been scarce so far, though a social media game called “The Sight” has offered intriguing flickers of footage. The first major Game of Thrones season 5 trailer will debut at select IMAX theaters at the end of January.
Two other HBO series will also premiere their new seasons on April 12. The second season of tech-geek comedy Silicon Valley will follow the first episode of Game of Thrones season 5 at 10:00 p.m., and the fourth season of Veep will begin at 10:30. Both shows will air for ten episodes.
