Earlier today, developer Bigpoint announced its upcoming free-to-play Game of Thrones MMO will be titled Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms. (Game of Thrones spoilers are mentioned in this article.)
The story of Seven Kingdoms is set shortly after the deaths of Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon and will be set during the second season of Game of Thrones, which is based on George R.R. Martin’s A Clash of Kings. The story itself will revolve around Rob Stark’s war with the south and both Renly and Stannis Baratheon’s individual claims to the Iron Throne.
Unfortunately, fans of the A Song of Ice and Fire series may be disappointed as the game is inspired by the HBO television series alone – not Martin’s book series.
The player themselves will be able to live through the “epic moments” of the television series, Bigpoint have said. Gameplay will involve players forming alliances through politics, player versus player combat and siege warfare.
Bigpoint, who developed the popular Battlestar Galatica Online (which saw over two million players join at the three month mark), and the Norwegian studio Artplant are collaborating on this title, using the currently popular Unity engine.
A beta has been planned, with further details following later this year. The first trailer will also premiere at the San Diego Comic-Con later this year.
