Game of Thrones fans have a great reason to pick up a new copy of the book that started it all. A Game of Thrones Illustrated Edition arrives next month!
To celebrate the first book’s 20th anniversary (yes — it’s been 20 freakin’ years), the Game of Thrones Illustrated Edition will be released October 18. It features 73 illustrations both old and new, and by the looks of it, the book is sure to be a must-have for longtime fans.
Refreshingly, the book will not depict the faces of the actors seen in the HBO adaptation for legal reasons. And the children will look as young as they’re described in the books, since the Illustrated Edition didn’t have any child labor laws to worry about.
Vanity Fair, who has an in-depth look at the making of the Illustrated Edition, offers 10 first looks. Some of them feature iconic Game of Thrones landmarks, and according to the report, “Martin labored with artist Ted Nasmith to create the ‘definitive’ versions of the famous castles, keeps, and ancestral homes of Westeros.”
The sketches depict Ned Stark’s execution, The House with Sansa, The Red Keep at King’s Landing, Ned and Jory Cassel, Drogo giving Viserys his crown, and Ned with Arya.
The Game of Thrones Illustrated Edition is now available for pre-order. This is the perfect gift for anyone who loves the story of Westeros!
Speaking of Illustrated Editions, the second book in the Harry Potter series, Chamber of Secrets will unveil its Illustrated Edition on October 4. Sorcerer’s Stone debuted last year.
