Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend and Water for Elephants) has been chosen by Lionsgate to helm Catching Fire.

After an exhaustive search over the past few weeks that included names such as Alfonso Cuaron, David Cronenberg, Tomas Alfredson, and Duncan Jones (among others), Lionsgate recently had narrowed the list down to Lawrence and Moneyball director Bennett Miller.

A reliable source confirmed to Hypable that the offer to Lawrence was made by Lionsgate today.

As this is still very much in negotiations right now, we don’t expect an official announcement to be made today. We’ll be sure to let you know when it happens.

Are you happy with Lionsgate’s choice? Like Catching Fire, I Am Legend and Water for Elephants were both based on books themselves.

In a poll we conducted earlier today on the site, 57% chose Lawrence over other contender Bennett Miller.
