Speaking in a new interview in support of Insurgent, the Divergent producers revealed they won’t adapt Veronica Roth’s Four.
Divergent producer Lucy Fisher said that they won’t adapt Roth’s novella for a simple reason: They want to keep 30-year-old Theo James in the role, and making him look like a teenager just isn’t possible.
“We’ve considered expanding in other directions,” she told the Hollywood Reporter. “Four takes place when [Four] is in high school. It would pain us too much to have Four be anybody but Theo. [Roth] wrote a lot of material that she didn’t use, too. Not to get ahead of ourselves, but we’ll mine her brain. But we keep Four as Theo James.”
Four consists of several short stories chronicling the main character’s life prior to meeting Tris in Divergent. Rumors about a potential adaptation have gained steam this year since Lionsgate’s CEO specifically cited the novella as a source they could work with.
Fisher’s comments about “a lot of material that [Roth] didn’t use” are interesting. Is she referring to ideas for other Divergent books? Deleted scenes? Divergent and Insurgent from Four’s perspective?
The future of the Divergent franchise after Allegiant, Part 2 (scheduled for release in March 2017) still seems very much up in the air, but one thing’s for sure: The producers and the studio want the series to continue in some fashion.
How do you think the ‘Divergent’ series can continue beyond ‘Allegiant’?
In the same interview with Divergent’s producers, Fisher revealed that they’ve already asked Roth about adapting her recently-announced duology. “Yes, we’ve talked to her about it, but it’s still early. She’s just writing it, and she’s very protective in the early stages,” Fisher said.
