E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey novel Grey will revisit the series from Christian’s point of view. But will it make it to the big screen?
Earlier this week, we brought the surprising — but not altogether unexpected, considering E.L. James’ major source of inspiration — news that a new Fifty Shades of Grey novel would hit stores later this month.
The original trilogy is told from main character Anastasia Steele’s point of view, but James’ new book Grey takes Christian Grey’s perspective, allowing readers the chance to experience the events of the first installment through different eyes.

Grey is to Fifty Shades of Grey what Midnight Sun would have been to Twilight, and we’re sure E.L. James’ fans were relieved when they learned that not only is the new book already written, but it comes out June 18 (Christian’s birthday).
But the question remains: is there any chance that Universal would try to spin this into a movie, to compliment the main trilogy?
Although it seems redundant to tell the same story twice, the appeal of Christian Grey might just be enough to fill seats at the movie theater. And indeed, considering the groundbreaking success of Fifty Shades of Grey, studio execs are probably already counting the extra $$$ a fourth movie could bring in.
Well, if it happens, The Hollywood Reporter cautions that could be without main stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. However, Universal does own the film rights to Grey because it has the rights to the characters, and “sources” tell THR it’s a “no-brainer,” which suggests the studio would at least give it some serious thought.

The stars are contractually obligated to star in all three movies based on the main book trilogy, but there is no mention of spinoff movies in their agreements.
Although contract re-negotiations could amend that situation, we can’t help but wonder if Johnson and Dornan would be willing to commit themselves to another movie in this franchise.
