AMC’s Walking Dead spinoff Fear The Walking Dead has to be a hit, and to help make sure that happens, the creators have developed a family dynamic different that what’s found on the original series.
Speaking to IGN this week, co-creator Robert Kirkman revealed how the show’s lead cast members will be related to one another. As you can tell from his comments, the family members will be part of a unique, Brady Bunch-style family.
“One of the things we’re trying to play with this tight-knit family unit in Fear the Walking Dead is this concept of an extended unique family,” he said. “What we have is Madison (Kim Dickens) and her family and we have Travis (Cliff Curtis) and his family. They’re building a relationship. They’re getting ready to be married. Civilization is crumbling around them. They both have kids from separate marriages. It’s just an interesting family dynamic to deal with in any story. But having all of the intricacies and struggles that come from that kind of family dynamic, and setting it against the fall of civilization and in the face of the zombie apocalypse just makes things that more interesting.”
The struggles the characters face on The Walking Dead are largely based around the zombies since none of the characters knew one another before the outbreak, so it sounds like the pre-existing relationships found on Fear will present unique storytelling opportunities.
Speaking of the zombies, Kirkman also teased that the undead on Fear The Walking Dead will not look like the ones we’re used to seeing on the original show. The reason for their different appearance? The zombies look different at the start of an outbreak. “They’re not going to be as decayed,” Kirkman revealed, “and they’re not going to be as monstrous, which is going to make the violence in the show and the different things that happen that much more startling. Because we’re going to be dealing with a much more human walker. So while there is going to be a tremendous amount of paranoia and psychological trauma, I think there’s not going to be any loss of zombie action or excitement in this show. We’ll be bringing in the best of both worlds.”
It’s interesting that the zombies would differ even this much from what we’re used to seeing — shouldn’t the zombies we see on The Walking Dead act this way when they first turn?
Fear The Walking Dead premieres in late summer before The Walking Dead season 6 launches.
