Universal is attempting to make adjustments to the existing Fast & Furious 7 script to send off star Paul Walker in a way that would honor his memory and please fans.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Chris Morgan is now “crafting revisions to the script that Universal execs hope can retire Walker’s character from the series using scenes already shot.” The report adds that if he’s able to adjust the script in a way that is “honorable” (in the words of an anonymous exec) to Walker, the cast may start filming again as early as January.
If they determine that the script cannot be adjusted and thus i s not possible to complete, the entire project may have to be scrapped. That will cause the insurance firm Fireman’s Fund to pay out $150 million to the studio, which would become one of the biggest Hollywood insurance claims in history.
THR emphasizes that a January re-start date is far from finalized and depends on what Morgan can come up with in a new script sending Walker off.
Fast & Furious 7 had a good portion of filming under its belt when Walker tragically died in a car accident in November while the cast was on a Thanksgiving break. The actor was attending a charity event when he went out for a ride with his business partner. Walker was not in the driver’s seat at the time of the accident.
The movie was set to hit theaters in summer 2014, but every indication – no matter what happens with the script – says that the film will be moved off that date once plans firm up.
